Doesn't the 20th Years Anniversary console and controller pad give you any clues?

 . Funnily enough I dug out one of my PS1 controllers at the weekend and was hugely disappointed to see that it has yellowed. Its been kept in a box in a cupboard and so it hasn't seen too much sunlight... it reminded me to always buy a non-white / non-grey console and controllers where possible. My SNES looks about two hundred years old :-(.

I think the original PS was the last console I bought that felt, technically, like a huge step up from the previous gen. The CD format, memory cards, polygon graphics, "real" sound... it was thrilling. Subsequent consoles have, of course, improved but they've never felt like such a jump forwards. I even liked the game cases (albeit they scratched easily and broke if not handled carefully) and expecially the original covers i.e. sans huge PlayStation name. Just having a small PS logo square made them seem ultra-cool.

I liked that the Xbox had a hard drive, and I love being able to share videos on my PS4, but overall - for me - no subsequent console has had such an impact on so many fronts.

The 5th generation really did feel like a revolution...

- Polygon 3D graphics
- CD
- FMV
- High quality music
- Marketed at adults (PlayStation anyway)
- Memory Cards allowing for saves and long games
- Analogue control

i never actually owned a playstation until the psp and then the ps3 but i played a load of the ps1 round my friends house. We use to play Battle Arena Toshinden, Tekken, Ridge Racer and the street fighter alpha games loads, i also really enjoyed Bloody roar and rival schools. i keep hoping they will remake both those games at some point.

Don't think I played one until a year after it came out, playing Resident Evil, Tekken 2 and F1 round a friend's definitely sold it to me, even though I'd just got a Saturn.

Wipeout was my fave PS1 game by far, followed by Tomb Raider.

Had two of the greatest games of all time on it, and a whole slew of great titles. Not my favourite games console ever, but it is up there.

That was a good time to be a gamer. As others have said, the jump from the previous gen was unbelievable. I guess you had to be there to understand.

It was also originally released on the Saturn although, graphically, that version was gash.

I wouldn't say that the original version was "gash"; there were some minor improvements to the PS version.

Great game on both platforms - I'd forgotten just how atmospheric the game is.

The Saturn version had a few notable downgrades, which are clear to see in those videos:

- Fewer colours, meaning that textures appeared more contrasted and blocky

- Less lighting effects, making Lara look flat

- Lack of transparency, especially on the white ripple effects on water surfaces

Just had a thought...

PS4 is the first Sony console I've bought personally before any of other generation consoles.

I got the Saturn and N64 before the PS1. I got the Gamecube and the original X-Box before the PS2. I got the 360 and Wii before the PS3.
