That's because there isn't a difference between the HDMI cables.

All HDMI cables are exactly the same pretty much.

So true, only complete mugs pay anything more than about a tenner for an HDMI cable and then try convince themselves that they produce a better quality picture.

That's not actually aimed at Jus Luke by the way, just an irritation of mine. Jus Luke's issues just raised that in my mind, it's likely the staff who sold them the PS3 didn't bother to inform them of the lack of HDMI cable in the box.

Thats good on you mate and well done for doing so.. the difference it would make is a lot! As I wasn't around for advice offering and it was bought without my consultation and the fact it was a supermarket purchase, it resulted in an technically untrained sale. Thats not the fault of the seller though, or the buyer. Whilst it states the components on the box it doesn't exactly suit the average joe. A standard performance lead should be provided just like every christmas day console I've witnessed opened since the NES all those years ago.

So then, where can I get one of these £10 leads from for my brother then?

Annoying yes but just buy a Tesco value HDMI cable for £2.99.
