PS4: What's in the box?

Image

The PlayStation 4 will be out this Christmas at a price of $399 / €399 / £349. But what exactly does that get you?

Here's your definitive guide to everything that comes included in the PlayStation 4 box, according to Sony. It's worth noting there's no PlayStation Eye camera included - that's sold separately and will set you back $59 / €49 / £44.

The PlayStation 4
Fairly obviously, the most important thing in your PlayStation 4 box is the console itself. It's packing a 500GB hard drive (though Sony points out that the actual disk space you'll have to play with is less than that because some space will be reserved for system processes). It's got 8GB of GDDR5 memory, an eight-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU, a 1.8 TFLOPS Radeon GPU, two USB 3.0 ports and a six-speed Blu-ray drive.

DualShock 4 controller
You'll get one DualShock 4 controller with the console. As with the DualShock 3, it has a built-in rechargable battery that charges via USB. If you want to buy extra controllers, they'll set you back $59 / €59 / £54 each.

Mono headset
The PlayStation 4 has a strong emphasis on sharing and multiplayer, so this time around the PS4 will come with a headset (something sold separately for PS3), allowing everyone to use voice communication right out of the box.

Cords and cables
Finally, the box comes with three cables. There's your standard AC power cord to power the system, there's an HDMI cable to plug it into your TV, and there's a USB cable, presumably to charge the DualShock 4 controller.

New DUALSHOCK®4 Wireless Controller

Image
The DualShock®4 controller features new innovations to deliver more immersive gaming experiences, including a highly sensitive six-axis sensor as well as a touch pad located on the top of the controller which offers completely new ways to play and interact with games. The new Share button puts video streaming and sharing a tap away.

System Specs

Image

The PS4 system focuses on the gamer, ensuring that the very best games and the most immersive experiences are possible on the platform. The PS4 system enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs. The PS4 system is centred around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art 1.84 TFLOPS graphics processor with 8GB of ultra-fast GDDR5 unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. The end result is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences.

I have no idea what's going on at Sony but they have by far the worst console designers.

This evening I'm going to PlayStation in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall with music by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. A few years back I went to Video Games Live. Some games have amazing music which is really bought to life by a full orchestra so having the RPO perform should be next level good.

The partnership with Classic FM demonstrates how game music has crossed over and brings them a new audience. I will be listening out for flOw, The Order 1886 and Uncharted.

Apparantly there's still some tickets available.

Featuring favourite themes from chart-topping games, this exhilarating live show – with a full symphony orchestra, guest presenter and spectacular light display – takes you on a musical journey from vast deserts and overgrown ruins, to ancient artefacts and futuristic landscapes, celebrating some of the most memorable gaming music from the past 20 years.

Featuring music from:

CRASH BANDICOOT, WARHAWK, RESIDENT EVIL, MEDIEVIL, ARC THE LAD, ICO, DARK CLOUD, flOw, LITTLEBIGPLANET, ECHOCHROME, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, MOSS, KILLZONE 2, WONDERBOOK, JOURNEY, THE LAST OF US, BLOODBORNE, HORIZON ZERO DAWN, EVERYBODY’S GONE TO THE RAPTURE, THE ORDER 1886, BLOOD AND TRUTH, GOD OF WAR, THE LAST GUARDIAN, UNCHARTED

They have certainly put out some amazingly un-tempting designs, Floex.

I honestly don't understand this idea about making different console designs.
It's a bloody box that sit's there and I occasionally shove disks into it I don't care what it looks like as long as it's not completely offensive.
Black and boxy is fine.

I was there, some tracks were better suited than others but i'm ultra-pissed that the presenter spoiled the big plot reveal of HZD on stage with little warning. Guess i'm done playing that now then

The new Official PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset is £64.99 at Amazon. Not a "bargain", but the cheapest they've been available at.

Worth waiting another six days to get an extra 15 quid off, I reckon!

Is that in the "Days of PSN" sale, Damian? I've had a look but can't see that this headset is included in the offers. All good if it is, though!

Edit: Time has passed and the headset is back up to £70 at Amazon.

KK's post above suggests it'll be £49.99 from 8th to 18th June?

Time for my annual "Where's the cheapest place for 12 months of PS+?" post, chaps. I realise the days of getting it for £29.99 are long gone but are there any deals for £39.99 floating around?

Good spot, Damian - I don't think the headset is listed on the PlayStation Blog EU site. They'll be a cracking deal for fifty wraps.
