Slim arrived this morning  Over 3 hours later I finally managed to make my mind up re if I wanted to make it primary or not :slol: Ended up having to call up PS Support :dread: but a) I got through without waiting and b) the chap knew of what he spoke! So yeah, I explained that I wanted household to retain access to games without my needing to be logged on or whatever the floop, and the fact the Slim only really needed my account on there. So he suggested I keep old one as primary.
I look forward to being told I was misinformed :P

:toot: The console itself is bloody lovely and I am *ecstatic* to be finally rid of the room illuminating power strip.

Physical button supremacy! Goodbye forever semi regular Russian Roulette game of am I about to hit the power or eject button?

Whilst PS4S is definitely quieter than my launch PS4 (and it hasn't once shifted into take-off mode), I wish it had a more uniform quietness to it. As it is, it actually flits between a very muted rattle and what can actually be called quiet. The muted rattle isn't annoying though, but it is a noise you are very much aware of if you have your PS4 is in close proximity to you. Even when nothing is in the disc drive or being uploaded, etc. Will see how it is to sleep with. (I like to watch Netflix and doze off.)

Actually really tempted to get a white Slim myself, even though I already own a PS4 that I barely use. :fp: I'll wait and see if they make a 1TB model and maybe by that time, Sony will do something to convince me to get a Pro.

Turns out the intermittent muted rattle isn't completely usual to PS4S :x Now I have to think about sending it back :fp:

For FFS. Is it actually malfunctioning or is the noise just very worrying?

I read someone on either GAF or Reddit say it's probably this wee thing within the console which detects if it is vertical or horizontal. So I guess it's a malfunction? It really doesn't sound too awful, but I'm worried about it leading to something worse down the line which, if that happens, means I'll have to deal with Sony and I really cba going through all that.

Time for correction/clarification: I initially thought the rattle was unrelated to the HDD being accessed, but I just tested it a couple of times, and the noise definitely occured when I went to play a digital game. (Though annoyingly it also comes and goes when I'm personally not doing anything to access the HDD.) So yeah, that sound, for this PS4S at least, is "usual". :x  So I'm now back to being in two minds about what to do. :slol:

Stuff it. Decided to keep it. I have the receipt/warranty if something goes spectacularly wrong, but I can live with it if it stays as is. And thus ends another SoK strawberry floats up the Simplest of Things.

I'd personally give it back to the shop and say it's defective. It really is better to do it now as you'll get given a brand new machine whereas Sony may just give you a refurb down the road. It's so much easier dealing with the likes of John Lewis, Richer Sounds and Amazon if given the chance than manufacturers.

It really is. My only gripe with its looks is the wee, intentionally designed gap between the HDD bay cover (which comes off very easily to reveal the HDD within) and the rest of the console. That and the fact the vents on the sides aren't painted to match the rest of the console.

Completely agree. If it had been bought from a shop. As it is, it's a pre-owned one which cost a measly £130 *and* is in fantastic condition. So if I send it back, which I can, and get a new one, it'd end up costing me an additional £70+. So yeah, gonna risk keeping it. I have the original receipt for it, so if anything does go wrong it shouldn't be a problem getting Sony to fix it.

My PS4 is pretty close to full. Is it easy putting another hard drive in? I changed the HD on my MacBook a few years back without any major issues.

Yes, simple. But don't forget you can now just plug in a USB drive and run games from it.

Yes?

Original design? Not as easy as Slim but, yeah, pretty straightforward:

PS4 can also handle external storage (as in load games from) now:

But apparently sometimes rest mode/other console features don't work quite as they should when external storage is being accessed.

I have this sound on mine and it definitely sounds like the HDD is being accesses as the sound is similar to the one that I can hear when an external hard drive is being accessed. It's barely noticeable and a far cry from the jet engine sounds of my 20th Anniversary model so I'm happy with the console.
