(I know it's been pointed out that many PS1 games haven't aged well, but I can still imagine Sony thinking it's a good idea.)

It would be nice, but they should focus on PS4/5 and PSVR.

I actually hope they do announce PS5, but for the love of god can it please have digital backwards compatibility? I've got a tonne of digital titles now.

Microsofts reaction would be priceless if a PS5 was announced!

Well, they've always had digital purchases carry over, and I'd expect their next console to be fully BC for sure.

I really hope they don't make any announcement about PS5 this year and leave it until next years E£ for a Christmas 2019 release.

I realise this is highly unlikely but if they have to do a hardware announcement I hope they go with Vita 2 for release next Q4 year.
They can give the engineers the challenge of making a handheld with as near as possible power parity with PS4 (I think they will be able to get fairly close) but with pretty similar form factor.
Mainly though this years E3 from Sony just needs to be about games on PS4 and PSVR.

As would the reactions of people who only just bought a Pro :fp: .

Announcing a PS5 at this point, beyond a vague 'We're working on it' sort of statement, would I think alienate a lot of customers. We've only just had PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim, the system still feels to me as though it's in its infancy (in terms of software), to announce another new main system would be too much too soon. They won't want to fall too far behind Scorpio so I'm sure we're probably going to see the next iteration sooner rather than later, but not at this E3.

I'm not sure Sony will go down the route of making a new handheld after the Vita either so I think I'd be even more surprised by a Vita 2, if they do come out with one I think it will be something closer to the Switch in terms of functionality.

I'd love to see a mini Playstation though and unlike Nintendo I think Sony would probably have the foresight to allow more games to be purchased and downloaded. Functionally it probably wouldn't be that different to something like the Playstation TV but with some games built in and a mini Playstation aesthetic I reckon it would sell really well.

3 years for the PS4 and then 3 for the Pro seems like the right approach.
This also gives Sony 2 years to get hardware that can outperform the Scorpio as I don't think they can get enough of a power gap with just one year.

I know I bang on about next gen this and that all the time but I'm glad the PS5 isn't being announced.
I don't think the hardware will be available just yet to make a big enough leap over the already launching Scorpio and a next gen system needs to be a leap and not just another step.
I feel the graphics hardware on the Scorpio will be enough that only a small upgrade will be needed but the real innovation for next gen will be the CPU and memory and if we have a few years of Ryzen being available on PC hopefully we can see a version of that be cheap enough to put inside a console. Christmas 2019 will be fine for PS5 launch.

What they'd smile and watch as Sony pulled their market share down around them by alienating all their customers? Yeah, maybe.

I'd mark it as extremely unlikely to happen. PS5 doesn't seem to make sense at the moment, even mentioning it doesn't make much sense this year.

Looking at what they should want out of PS5 and where the technology is at the moment, even a 2019 launch date seems like it might be premature.

Digital Foundry tests out PS4 external storage:

PS4 external storage tested: 4TB hard drive vs SSD performance

Is a large external drive faster than your stock HDD? And how much faster is solid state storage?

I just wish they'd sort out the issue with external HDDs when the console is in rest mode. I regularly get the error that the drive wasn't disconnected properly and it needs repairing. It seems to be common from what I've read on google and doesn't matter what USB port or what HDD is used.

Personally I use the rear USB port on the Pro with a 2Tb external HDD. Use the front USBs for the headset Bluetooth connector and for charging the headset

Snap :toot: . I also have an external hard drive on my original PS4 but that has to plug into the front of the console; amazing that it was designed without any rear USB ports.

I never use rest mode now as, on the few times that I did use it, it never seemed to work properly.

Rest mode also uses way more power than you'd expect.

I love rest mode for the constant updates and remote downloading of stuff off the store. Plus it's great if I'm between save points to not have to worry about losing progression.

However due to the external HDD repair messages I now find I either lose some progress (as I install new stuff on the external) or I have to stop at / return to a save point.

Any PS4 Pro owners out there having issues with 4K RGB output? Just got a new TV, which is great in every way except when I try to output from the PS4 Pro in 2160p RGB. It works perfectly in 2160p YUV420, but in RGB the screen intermittently goes from black screen to displaying correctly. Some times it's every few minutes, some times it's every few seconds. The panel is a Sony 4K with 10 bit HDR. I've tried every combination of settings and nothing seems to work. I've looked up the issue and this seems to be effecting Samsung and LG TVs too, so I assume it's a Pro issue?

To be fair, I really can't see any difference between RGB and YUV240, it's just frustrating that it doesn't work as it should :( . Not sure whether to live with the issue and hope for an update or send both of them back?????

Well, guess no-one else has this issue. For those that are interested it turned out to be the bloody HDMI cable, I ordered a quality one and that has sorted out all of my issues. Can't believe it was something so simple, it's quite a relief because I was envisioning having to send back my brand new 4K TV, my PS4 Pro, or both.
