Have it just focus on 1080p HDR output and you have a pretty sweet handheld and maybe just maybe they can make all PS4 games available for it if it's close enough in power.
I think it's technically possible as the Vita has quite a lot of internal space and even if they have to make it a few mm fatter I feel it would still be acceptable.

There were comments on EG yesterday that heavily implied that handheld was dead as far as Sony is concerned. That's what people were inferring from the comments, anyway.

I fear you may be right which is a shame as Sony can make great hardware when they try.

This probably isn't the place to go into detail on this, but the Vita was so close to being an incredible machine. I think the ideas Sony had about big screen link-ups, remote play, etc, have been taken by Nintendo and fined-tuned (hopefully successfully) for the Switch.

Slight flaws in execution (by Sony), such as the missing shoulder buttons and expensive memory cards held back what should have been a stonking machine.

The Vita is an incredible machine /despite/ Sony's dropping of nearly all western support for it. As you say the missing shoulder buttons really hurt the console for controller parity, which hamstrings remote play and console ports (such as the Jak Trilogy). The memory card situation was incredibly poorly judged and I think Sony would have been better off making the base console more expensive and using SD cards - but unfortunately the PSP had been a success despite its (lesser, but still present) memory card issues so I think Sony believed it to be a viable strategy.

If anyone wants a successor to the Vita, the Switch is certainly looking like it. It's already demonstrating the indie support, so now it just needs to take over the JRPG niche too. I think Sony would find it hard to launch a new handheld in direct competition with Nintendo - the PSP succeeded thanks to its ahead-of-its-time multi-media approach and being able to boast massive superiority over the existing handheld market. The Switch by comparison won't be massively out-gunned any time soon.

I think the Digital Foundry vid I posted in the Switch topic about how they're partnering with Nvidia shows the possibility for incremental upgrades to the Switch with the real question being how frequently they'll decide to refresh the system.

Where is all this PS5 talk coming from?

I haven't even got a PS4 yet, and, to me at least, it feels like this generation is (or at least should be) still in its infancy, especially with the Pro/Scorpio releases

Fake edit- Just checked, it came out in 2013! I feel so old

Remember when you were a kid and adults would tell you that time goes quicker when you get older? Remember how you would laugh at them and think that they were talking utter bollocks?

Yeah, we are now very very old.

Do you want a boring (but very plausible) explanation for why time goes faster when you're older? It's been argued that it's because your internal clock measures time as a proportion of your own life. So when you turn five, the previous year was an entire fifth of your life to date. My current year will only be a 39th of my entire life, so feels shorter.

But yeah, my PS4 is nearly four years old. That's strawberry floating mental.

I have heard that explanation before.

But it doesn't change the fact that we are all old. Very old. Very very old. Near death in fact.

Your students are only 5-7 years old?

A part of the rubber on the left analog stick of my launch-day PS4 controller was wearing away. So I've bought some Gioteck thumb tops. In bright blue. With weird nodules poking out the top.

I don't believe that Sony will make another handheld again. Bar lacking the other 2 shoulder buttons and a quick decay of exclusive 1st/3rd party support, it was near flawless. A shame.

I see the Killing Floor 2 servers are absolutely strawberry floated and it's impossible to get a game. Didn't see the coming, it was the exact same in the beta.
