Hm, difficult one, I'm not convinced you'll see much of a difference. If you can get a really good deal, go for it, if not, just buy a bigger HDD.

I upgraded from a PS4 to a PS4 Pro and - despite being unsure at first - I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do so. I use a 1080p dispay and there is not a stunning difference but the added power of the Pro does boost small details and frame-rates for games that support it. As an example, I recall a few folk commenting that The Last Guardian was pretty choppy on their PS4s whist I found it to be reasonably smooth on the Pro.

On my original PS4 (which my nephews now have) I upgraded the internal drive from the standard 500Gb device to a 2Tb model and that was great. However, on the Pro I just plugged in an external hard drive and that really is a boon. I use a 4Tb Seagate Expansion USB-powered drive and it works a treat.

Having done some snooping I think an external HD is the way forward for me. Thanks for providing a link to your one, Jawa, it's now on my wish list :toot:

Have you thought about an SSD or Hybrid rather than a mechanical drive? I have a 1TB hybrid drive and as I only play one game at a time still have about half of it spare.

Yes?

I have looked at SSDs and they're way too expensive by the looks of things. I'll check out hybrids, but basically I'm after more memory than speed.

Why don't they make consoles that are modular? I'd happily pay extra to swap in a 4k drive or more ram into my PS4.

I've been lucky enough to pick up the new Gold headset; the official kit that is replacing the 2.0 headset (called Gold in the USA) in Sony's product line.

I've only used it for an hour but, in comparing this new Gold set to my older 2.0 set, my initial impressions are:

+ The new set is smaller, lighter and more comfortable
+ Sound quality is excellent; I need to do a side-by-side test to confirm but it feels like the sound is clearer and sharper
+ Build quality is decent; soft pleather (plastic leather) earcups, proper buttons rather than the "beneath the surface buttons" of the older version and a simple but tough and comfortable headband
+ The set now contains two in-built voice pick-up points rather than the one of the old model. This should help project a clearer voice online although I have yet to test this
- The headband does not have a folding capability like the old set; this is not really a problem as that aspect broke for some people on the old set

The price point is circa £77; not cheap but reasonable for the sound and build quality that you get. It's too early to give a definitive view but, from this initial test, I like this new kit.

What's the difference between these new Gold ones and the Platinum edition?

The Platinum set offers a "3D" audio capability... although very few games have support for it. The Platinum design has a premium finish but costs substantially more (circa £125 versus the Gold's £77).

3D audio seems to be destined to be another under supported feature by Sony. I was excited about it at first, particularly as Uncharted 4 apparently makes great use of it, but overall nobody really appears to be bothering with it. Whereas things like Dolby are here to stay.

Definitely due to me earlier shining a spotlight on the new Gold headset, the price has been reduced to £69 at Amazon. It is also available for this price at Smyths Toys.

I would be annoyed at the swift price reduction bar the fact that Amazon refunded me a tenner for pony delivery service :) .

It adds a data collection opt-out option. If you opt into both kinds of data collection, Sony/partners may send targetted ads to your PS4. They'll also track your behaviour in games, etc.

What level of performance increase can we expect on the standard PS4, Pro or XB1X levels of performance?

Yes?

Do these new headsets improve sound quality compared to using a new 4k TV with no soundbar? - Would the experience be more immersive?
Do the headsets still work OK without losing any features if connected via the wire only?

It's hard to answer the sound quality question, Red, as I guess that depends upon the sound capabilities of your TV. As a rule of thumb, though, I'd suggest that a set of headphones usually offer a greater sense of immersion than sound coming from a TV. The headphones work wirelessly with the PS4 (via a small USB dongle) and they have a cable for using them with other devices.

Does anyone know how accurate the stat next to the trophy is? I'm playing a game where it would suggest no one has the platinum trophy.

I get normally the percentage would dictate how rare the trophy is but I've never seen one with 0.00 against the platinum and a subsequent trophy.

I think they're really accurate although the lowest I've seen is 0.1% personally. If you view a trophy guide website they will always have higher percentages as those sites are used by trophy whores but they will show if any of their members have achieved the plat e.g. PSNprofiles
