Yeah but once both products are in the shops, and the early adopters have... adopted, it won't take long for word to spread. Then it might be interesting.

Both new consoles will do well but whether or not they surpass this gen is mainly depends on how long this new gen lasts. Given the tech is much more mainstream this time I can see decent room for discounts and bundles in the next few years.

I don't really think it will be interesting at all. It's usually about how many they're able to produce this early into the cycle rather than a measure of demand. It took the PS3 two months to sell 1m units in the US, but that wasn't any indication of poorer demand than the PS4, because the console was constantly sold out during that time. The PS3 was also available in more regions at the time. Launch statistics will forever be skewed by the territories they're launching in and how many they're able to produce, there's very little to read into it this early. Unless of course you have a side in the 'console war' ;).

If you take that view, why bother posting a topic at all.

I've never posted a topic on it? I entered this thread as I was curious to what people were saying. This being a forum for discussion and all. Just because I believe launch statistics don't paint as much of an impression of demand as some people believe, doesn't mean I should completely disregard anything on that topic, does it?

I actually cancelled my PS4 pre-order, not because I don't think it's a good product but more because I see no pressing reason to buy one at this stage due to the game line up.

That, and the fact that I recently dropped a few grand on a new car and am trying to patch up the whole in my savings account. I'll be in a better position to evaluate my money situation after Christmas has run its course.

I didn't say you did, just saying if everyone had that view no one would create such a topic. If people aren't interested in sales, just ignore the topic.

Erm, you did? "...why bother posting a topic at all." I'm guessing mistakenly then. And you're completely missing the point. I am interested in sales. I'm often present in sales topics. I was merely pointing out the first 24 hours that you are so looking forward to compare is likely more an indication of supply rather than demand.

Look at the PS3 for example. We didn't get a 24 hour sales tally in those days, but it was the second biggest console launch in UK history (at the time). In the grand scheme of things it meant little, plenty of consoles lifetime sales still surpass it in the UK, including the Xbox 360, which had lower launch sales, but also a smaller supply of consoles. Just because the supply wasn't there, doesn't mean the demand wasn't there. Both sold out in the UK.

The Xbox One will undoubtedly sell out. For me, it will be far more interesting to see figures when supply for both consoles meet demand, and consoles are readily available. I think any comparisons within a 24 hour period are redundant because they're more a comparison of supply, of who can make the most. That doesn't mean I'm not interested in sales.

A little misleading seeing as we already knew there were over 1 million preorders for the thing. Technically the PS4 sold more than 1 million units before it was even released.

Not everyone follows through with their pre-order.

No, you misunderstood my comment as being aimed specifically at you, hence if everyone thought that way, why post this topic (and of course everyone doesn't think this way). The first 24 hours shows possible demand (if there is more stock than demand), manufacturing capability and also how accurate manufacturers forecast is vs actual (they won't want to over manufacture as costs will come down over time and if there are faults, they won't want a stock pile of faulty inventory). The first 24 hours of sales can tell us a lot more than just demand. I assume Sony have not stated they have sold all stock.

Is that good? I need context. A bar graph or something.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Plus the million preorders were worldwide, not just in the US.

Those XB1 figures look pretty bleak.

Really pleased to see it's done so well. I want the Xbox One to sell loads too, it makes a point that people still want console quality games and that not everyone is content playing Candy Crush on a strawberry floating phone or tablet.

Console gaming

I reckon Xbone will sell twice that next week in America alone then another million across Europe.

My understanding is that in the US preorders are generally paid for in advance.

bandwagon wrote:Plus the million preorders were worldwide, not just in the US.

There was a story that was worldwide, but its been pretty heavily covered that pretty much all stock pre-Christmas (and definitely at launch) has already been accounted for by preorders. Therefore at least the vast majority of these sales will have been preorders.

Didn't they say that was worldwide too?

Also Americans didn't pay for their pre-orders in advance.
