It's frustrating that some manufacturers are not supplying power plugs... I don't think I have a USB plug so this'll be an extra purchase if I jump on board.

It's a good move from an environmental perspective. A few years ago now the EU pushed phone manufacturers into not supplying adapters with every phone and that helped the adoption of standard charging ports in handsets.

It's a very good move environmentally, I must have 20+ USB chargers in my house from the various phones, tablets and other gadgets that I've acquired over the years.

For a huge number of people the situation will be the same so including them with everything is just a pointless waste of electronics at this point. Most people won't need one so don't include something that is just going to be thrown away.

I think they're going to include a few Dual Shock compatible titles as an excuse to sell one as an add-on in 2019.

I was going through the A-Z of OPM and trying to narrow it down to just 15 more titles is absolutely impossible.

Um Jammer Lammy
Parappa The Rapper
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider
Resident Evil Director's Cut (because why would you choose the original over this?)
Silent Hill
Colony Wars
Syphon Filter 1-3
Destruction Derby 1-3
Kula World
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4
ISS Pro
GTA
Final Doom
Wipeout 1- 3/Special Edition
Sheep, Dog N Wolf
Rollcage Stage 2
Overboard!
Quake 2
Ace Combat 1-3
Akuji The Heartless
Alone in the Dark: The New Knightmare
Alundra
Bishi Bashi Special
Brian Lara Cricket
Bust-A-Move 1-4
Crash Team Racing
Driver
Dino Crisis
Everybody's Golf
G-Police
Gran Turismo 1-2
International Track and Field
Medal of Honor
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver
Micro Machines/Maniacs
Music 2000
Mortal Kombat 3
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX
Parasite Eve 2
Porsche Challenge
V-Rally 2
Street Fighter(s)
Speed Freaks
Cool Boarders 2/3
Tombi
Vagrant Story
Tenchu 1-2
Mr Domino
Medievil 1-2
Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis
Klonoa
Fear Effect 1-2
Dead or Alive
Colin McRae 1-2
Circuit Breakers
Croc 2

Honestly, you could be arguing what to include all day long. I'm guessing Sony came up with a list and then set about seeing what they could and couldn't get hold of.

Really need that hack.

How was it done for the NES Classic? What interface was used? How much additional storage was there?

RE the lack of an AC adapter, if it uses the same amount of power as the SNES mini, just plug it into a spare USB port on yer telly. Job's a goodun.

I've never played Jumping Flash properly, but I'm really glad it's on there. I feel that some good cult classics like that would be a step in the right direction. If we were to have ten stone cold classics and ten lesser know games, I'd personally stick Kurushi, Tombi and Breath of Fire IV in the latter category.

CTR would be a good shout, gives the Crash representation while also not being a part of the crash trilogy remake

For some reason this doesn't have me as excited as the NES/SNES classic mini releases did. I adored the PS1 back in the day and it's still home to some of my all time favourites (FFVII  ) but I don't know if I'll be picking this up.

I think the idea of having "authentic" releases of old Nintendo games ready to go on my TV appeals more because that is the best way to play them, for the most part at least. There's only so much you can do to spruce up a SNES game. Whereas for this there is plenty of ways that an emulator on my PC, phone or tablet can give me a better PS1 experience than this machine will likely be able to.

I always shy away from phone / tablet emulators as touch-screen controls are often frustrating for fast-paced console games. I'm on the fence at the moment about this PS mini and the games included will probably tip me either way. I'd be totes up for a MS, MD and N64 mini, though  .

Yeah touch screens are not the best for many games, there are plenty that work well though - I played through all of the PS1 Final Fantasy games on my phone a couple of years back and it worked well because they are slower paced and don't require quick "twitch" response input.

My point really is that if I emulate any of the games this PlayStation classic is going to provide I will almost certainly be able to do that with smoother graphics, higher resolutions, faster load times, customisable controls and other benefits like the ability to fast forward gameplay etc. Those are big wins for the PlayStation era games, but were less of an issue for me with the SNES games because as I say there's only so much you can (or want) to do to improve the experience with them!

There was plenty of extra storage on the NES/SNES classics but that's because the games themselves are tiny and getting smaller storage than they put in it probably would've actually cost more because of the lack of demand for storage that small.

With SNES games you're talking a few MB on size per game.
For PS1 games you're talking more 300-700MB per disc, with some games requiring multiple discs. FF7 alone is going to clock in at somewhere between 1.5-2GB.
They might go with 32GB of storage, in which case there'll be little to nothing left for additional games, but if they have several multi disc games that might not be enough.
If they go with 64GB of storage though there should be room for another 10-20 games.

Edit - Why the strawberry float would anyone want a slot wasted on Star Wars – Masters of Teras Kasi?
And as much as I'd love Time Crisis, playing it without a Light Gun would be awful, but Light Guns don't work on modern TV's sadly.

There are ways to expand the storage on the SNES/NES classic as well so there may be a way to do that for the PlayStation as well.

Lack of certainty as to whether I'll be able to load more games on this (unofficially) is another thing that puts me off this somewhat. I didn't love all of the games on the SNES classic but I knew I could put more on (as well as putting loads of games for other 16/8 bit system on there as well) - with this there is a much greater risk of just being stuck with the 20 they give you.

GAME DNA wrote:Sony announced yesterday the PlayStation Classic: the original PlayStation in miniature with two controllers and 20 pre-installed games.

Apparently, more games could find their way to the retro console.

Image

The background: The PlayStation Classic carries an FCC seal. This seal is actually only required for devices that process radio signals.

Since the controllers are wired, we assume that the console has a Wifi interface on board. This would make it possible to install additional games later. Maybe Sony is already planning a classic store for the console.

Well Sony has debunked the potential to upload more games, so that just leaves firmware updates, cloud saves and maybe Trophy support?

I also wonder what is behind that flap, if anything? Potential for a booster pack of games down the road? Because while they could always ship a PSone Classic, I can't see them selling another identikit PlayStation Classic.
