Licencing issues and it controls horribly.

Still, better than the Saturn version with the explosions that looked like giant orange chessboards.

I'm always impressed by just how dominant PlayStation was in peoples minds. Especially when Resident Evil, Tomb Raider and Wipeout are considered quintessentially PlayStation (Specifically PS1), but were all multi-platform at launch. None of them were exclusives to begin with and all had Saturn versions (As ropey as 3D Saturn games often were).

I’m a sucker for these retro consoles, I think it might be cool if they did a second one too; a PSOne mini with two dual shocks and some of the latter day classics like Bishi Bashi Special and Demolition Racer

re: games looking ugly, wouldn't surprise me if these render at a higher resolution. At least at 480p, if not maybe somewhere around 720-1080. You'd be surprised how well older games can hold up at higher res, though 2D UI elements don't scale as gracefully. Hopefully emulation will be solid too and the input lag less than it was on PS3 PS1 Classics via HDMI

I for one can't wait to start showing my kids the games on the NES/SNES/PS1 minis. It'll be so cool to share my early gaming experiences with them

They'll probably be bored rigid :slol:

D'aww! And ha, a rite of passage for any child with their parent's favourite old things.

I will buy this to add to my shelf of tiny consoles so I can feel giant.

Nope

Tomb Raider released on Saturn a few weeks before PlayStation/PC but suffered from blocky textures, lack of lighting and a framerate that would dip close to single figures compared to PlayStation's consistent 30fps (video below).

WipEout released on PlayStation on UK launch Sept 1995 and came to Saturn in Feb 1996, the framerate made it unplayable, textures were rough and it was full of that ugly transparency (video below), licenced music was taken away too.

Resident Evil release on PlayStaion in August 1996 and didn't come to the Saturn until October 1997, it wasn't a bad port, but the lack of character lighting made them look 2D and too bright.

Destruction Derby turned up on Saturn and PC, but I don't know how long after.

Never played it on Saturn but wow does it look horrendous in comparison

God knows what low resolution it was running at, Saturn was supposed to be able to handle more colours than the PlayStation but the textures looked so blocky on third party ports.

Outside of Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Nights and Panzer Dragoon it absolutely sucked to be a Saturn owner at the time.

Yep, I think you're on the right lines, Jazzem. I've done some digging and, on SIE's press release, the "video output" is stated as being "720p, 480p".

Ooh well spotted! Would be pretty impressive if it could render them at 720p given the unit's size. Also would technically make this the definitive way to play the included games officially!

The worst example was Hardcore 4x4

PlayStation version ran buttery smooth 60fps

Saturn version was like a flickbook (sick bucket required)

One valid argument I feel this does bring up is if a better version of a game exists, such as it would with a Destruction Derby, GTA, Resident Evil or a Tomb Raider, why you wouldn’t use it for the benefit of playing this on a HDTV.

I know there’s “authenticity” (laziness?) but both the PS2 and 3 even featured tech that could be turned on or off to improve textures. I hope this at least includes that.

No emulation details yet, but the specs do mention 720p, and the weird texture warping on the floor in that Final Fantasy VII 3D scene seems to have gone too.

I hope to god we don't end up with the slow PAL version of Teeken 3 again.

Yeah I'm curious about that side of this, whether there'll be a disk speed option too or if they'll just default for either standard or double. I suspect they don't want to go too heavy on customisation options given the more accessible nature of the product

They'd be bonkers to go with the PAL versions, they'd frequently stutter over HDMI due to 50fps not fitting nicely in a digital 60Hz refresh rate

Ever put a Tekken 3 disc into a PS3? Horrendous interlacing, it's just a blurry mess and it's really off-putting.

I always played PS1 games on PS3 without the optional smoothing effects.

I liked the authentic crisp image complete with jaggies, though I'm glad they appear to be doing 720p upscaling.
