SoulBlade is the only other Namco game I'd put on the list.

Time Crisis is fondly remembered but terrible without the gun, Ace Combat 3 is also great, but not as popular as SoulBlade was.

Loads of sites and YouTuber's demanding FF VIII, FF IX and FF Tactics... one game per franchise guys.

Square's PS1 lineup is so vast and interesting (Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Bushido Blade, Front Mission 3, Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi etc) that it'd be neat to have another non-FF title from them on there. Whether any would be considered popular enough is another thing, though I would've thought Wild Arms was too obscure so who knows

I wouldn't mind Final fantasy tactics as it's very different, but not another regular final fantasy

Interesting, Google Trends seems to think that it's not caused much of a splash yet in terms of search activity. Will be interesting to see how it trends closer to launch and when we hear more about the games.

I was just thinking how including Final Fantasy VII on this doesn't look so great when you realise the graphically superior PC versions are available on both the PS4 and Xbox (and Switch?). Why would you want to play the PS1 iteration? And that's kind of the problem, really. If a better version exists, why wouldn't you play or include that instead? And with a bit more effort Sony could have included both (like with Monkey Island, you press a button and it reverts between the original and remastered editions).

When it comes to games like Metal Gear Solid, Driver, Tomb Raider, Destruction Derby, Resident Evil...you'd take another format, in most cases PC. Wipeout was on PC as well, but I don't know how that stacks up against the PlayStation version.

It's all about nostalgia, Sony are trying to get this to being as close to the original as possible.

The feel of the controller.
The startup sound.
The 240i resolution
The graphical glitches and loading

It's all important

I also think you have to remember who this is being aimed at - the casual gamer. Your average person on the street doesn't know or care that they can play PS1 games in higher resolution on PC, they just want a neat looking thing that sits under their tv and lets them play the games that they remember from way back when.

Just look at how well the SNES Classic has done.

Those games have been rereleased countless times on Wii, Wii U and have been available on ROM sites for nearly 2 decades.

But the vast majority of old SNES owners don't know this, I saw friends share images on Facebook on Christmas day banging on about how they'd not played these games since they were 10 and how amazing/weird the experience was.

Most PlayStation owners haven't heard that startup sound since about 2000 and it'll bring back floods of memories for people who end up getting this.

I listen to it far more than I'd care to admit :slol:

Yeah, still get chills.

The music's really important, I'd not played Tekken 3 for years and years, but just hearing the character select theme the other week brought back loads of memories about high school and the friends I'd played the game with (some I'd completely forgotten about) and it's a really weird feeling.

It's something screenshots just can't replicate, if they want this to sell just make a TV ad with a montage of game clips and tunes like the startup theme, Metal Gear's alert, Resident Evil's save room, Crash Bandicoot's title screen, Tomb Raader's title screen, tunes people haven't heard in nearly 2 decades and watch the cash flood in.

It felt like the future. It was magical. I don't even need to listen to it, I can just hear it.

It's funny how certain sounds stick with you isn't it, the PS1 startup is certainly an iconic one.

The Gamecube startup is hard to get out of my head as well although that doesn't have the same place in my heart.

Couldn't tell you what the PS2 sounded like - did it have a startup tune?

I actually quite envy these people, to actually have gone that long without having touched anything like these games must genuinely be an amazing feeling!

Yeah, it was that weird ethereal sound that you might have once played by mistake on a school keyboard with a weird synth setting turned on.

Oh yeah, just listened back to it now - not a patch on the original. :datass:

I've kept in touch with quite a few friends from high school (1995-2000) and the ones who are on my PSN list or share stuff about gaming had a PlayStation at school.

The 4/5 I remember who had an N64 instead don't seem to be into gaming at all now? Maybe the Nintendo kids just outgrew gaming while the PlayStation ones continued to grow up with them.

The PS1 startup is iconic, but it is not as great as the “SE-GA!” voice at the start of Megadrive Sonic the Hedgehog.

Did any games outside Sonic actually have this?

Saying that, you'd be hard pressed to find a MegaDrive owner who didn't have a single Sonic game in their collection.

It’s probably worth its own thread, but some of the greatest gaming sounds are:

1. SE-GA!
2. PS1 startup
3. Super Mario Bros. theme tune
4. Pacman’s “wakka wakka wakka wakka”
5. Lemmings screaming “Oh no!”

The Mega Drive version of Jurassic Park had the T-Rex saying Sega, which as an 8 year old was incredible.
