PS4 games incoming

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/03/ ... s-in-2017/

We’re excited to announce that PS Now’s catalog is set to grow even further, as we’ll be expanding to include a new platform: PlayStation 4 games. All of the games in the service, including PS4 games, will be included with a single PS Now subscription. We’ll share more information as we get closer to launch, so stay tuned.

In the next few weeks we’ll kick off a private test with PS4 games on PS Now. If you’re an active PS Now subscriber, keep an eye on your email in case you get an invitation.

This service still isn't available in Ireland, what a joke.

Wait, does this mean PS4 games will be playable on PC then?

Edit: it does! Wow, i might be able to play the last of us remastered after all without buying a PS4. Score!

I don't think Sony know who their customers are for this service.

The concept for PS Now was interesting, play PlayStation games without owning a PlayStation. PS Now was available for PS3, PS Vita/TV, Sony TVs & Blu-ray players and Samsung TVs, but this support has been discontinued. Currently it is for PC users who want to play PS3 games and PS4 users who want backwards compatibility with some PS3 games.

Now Sony will be adding PS4 games to the mix. Microsoft recently announced Game Pass service so the timing makes me suspect this is a reaction. As Sony are adding PS4 games then they should allow PS4 owners the option to download the rented games.

From their support page..

Is there a PS Now app for Mac?

No. We are evaluating Mac support, but have nothing to announce at this time.

How good is your internet going to have to be to be able to stream a PS4 game at an acceptable level?

That's not bad then, I tried a trial of PlayStation Now a while ago and found it worked surprisingly well considering the broadband in my house isn't the best. It wasn't perfect but the games I tried were all playable.

Surely it scales though based on available bandwidth?

I wonder if this is the start of the transition away from physical game media altogther. We'll probably get a PS5 which will be similar to the PS4, but after that I wouldn't be surprised if the PS6 is just a streaming box with a couple of controllers.

Eventually we will see consoles that don’t have any physical media. PS5/Xbox2 will probably be too soon for that, thanks to the awful broadband infrastructure in the US and to an extent the UK. If we see massive improvements to internet connections over the next 10 years, then I reckon PS6/Xbox3 could ditch physical media completely.

What I think will happen next gen though is that there will be a version of the consoles that ships without any physical media capability. Sony and MS will then judge how successful that is before deciding the fate of their next next gen consoles.

To be honest I'd be okay with the principal of this. But - but! - you just know that the manufacturers wiould use this as an excuse to drive up game pricing and to evolve the "service rental" aspect. The digital Stores would be monopolised distribution. Even now, newer "big" titles are being priced at £90 (including season pass). Imagine if there was no competing retail channel  .

Absolutely, but that is the way we are heading.

Hopefully governments will put a stop to it under competition laws and force Sony/MS to allow other companies to sell games on the marketplaces. You could have the console manufacturers online store as well as Game, CDKeys, Amazon, etc all selling games via PS5/Xbox2 with their own sales and pricing structures.

I bet MS/Sony will not do that until a big territory (US or EU) force them to though.

MS and Sony already allow other companies to sell games on the marketplaces.

Yes but I am talking about other companies having their own marketplaces with competing prices.

Look at how Steam keys are sold by more companies than just Valve.
