Honestly, I think MS will offer free online. The Gamepass could easily cover any loss in revenue should it take off.

Why would they? Folk have been happy to cough up for Live for almost two decades and now it's cheaper than PSN+

This.

There's a small chance they'd do it for the launch of their next gen console as part of their marketing strategy, but I can't see them giving up $2.88billion.

Because Sony is market leader. We all know the problems Xbone has suffered, they're playing catch up right now but making the right noises.

There's zero reason to do it this gen but come next, start making waves to get that 360 market that went to Sony.

Reading that article, that sum is based on ifs. Not to say there isn't a ton of money in it if they didn't hit that number but there's other revenues to make up lost costs.

If MS did make it free, I'm sure Sony would have to follow. I can't see either of them giving up on a revenue stream they've built.

If MS did make the service free then I imagine it would be much more difficult to go back to demanding a paid up service at a later date.

As it stands, though, MS will have the most powerful console on the market with the cheapest, and lets face it, superior online service for consoles. There is no real reason for them to suddenly drop the XBL fee.

They'll also have the most expensive console on the market, this won't be a mainstream push. I'm still perplexed why they are selling it is high :fp:

They need to change momentum, free online would be a major pull for many.

Hmm, yeah I guess so. Perhaps free 3 months XBL as an incentive whether you buy an X1 or an X1X? Even over just the Christmas period this would encourage sales.

Cheers for that. :)

Used the 5% discount and bought two of them. Had to buy them separately though to get the 5% off both. Now subscribed until September 2020.

Just imagine if before 31st August Sony say "after considering our loyal customer base, we have decided that the prices for PSN+ will remain unchanged. But thanks for rushing out and giving us a boost to our Q4 earnings  "

Maybe this is helping to offset the price cut for the PS4/Pro later in the year...

I'm afraid the price has gone up now, OR. It's quite volatile at the moment; it was £37 before dropping down to that £33 mark... and now back up to £36.

They could, but $2.88billion a year is a hell of a lot of money to risk.

They wouldn't be risking $2.88billion. The writer of the Forbes article seems to have missed the key point about "active users". Anyone signing in to Xbox Live gets classed as an active user. MS don't release the number of gold subscribers.

It's a little old but they said around 50% pay for Gold.

If the Forbes article is counting everybody and not just Gold, then $1.44billion is still a bloody huge pile of cash to risk giving up.
