PlayStation Vita? What's a PlayStation Vita?

I bought Kingdom Come: Deliverance yesterday, it came with a code to redeem some bonus content. Check out the different ways you can redeem it!

Thread topic: What console was most abandoned by its creators? I'm not looking for consoles that killed a company (Dreamcast), but consoles that were retroactively erased from history as the company continued in the business.

The Vita seems an obvious choice for PlayStation, and PSTV kind of goes hand-in-hand with it, but I guess you might count PS mobile too, despite not strictly being a console?

Nintendo probably have the most infamous example with the Virtual Boy, but I kind of see the WiiU going a similar way. Re-release everything on Switch and act like it came straight after the Wii (I'm sure many people think it actually did). It was pretty obvious that Nintendo gave up on developing games for the WiiU and moved them over to the Switch instead - even Breath of the Wild ended up worse off on the WiiU.

The Vita launched with an exclusive Uncharted game, so I think we thought it'd be like the PSP but better... ports, originals and franchise episodes exclusive to the console. And when it arrived, my first thoughts atop that were... wow, what a brilliant piece of hardware.

Didn't quite work out like that, did it? Between the early games, and the monthly dripfeed of PS+ stuff (as a bonus, seeing as I mainly use this for the PS4 content), I've just about got my money's worth, but it could have been so much more (and with that hardware, *should* have been).

The way they handled memory and storage was terrible though, especially the hoops they made you jump through to get a card with decent capacity in the UK. I understand why they went with a bespoke format (after piracy helped kill the PSP), but the price and availability was a joke.

Sega 32X? I know it's not a console per se, but that got put out to die by Sega America whilst Sega Japan was busy pushing the Saturn. Terrible strategy which no doubt helped kill both bits of kit.

Actually I might change my suggestion to just the Sega Saturn itself, that poor thing was well and truly stitched up. Unexpected early release screwing over developers, having to compete with the new Playstation that was taking the world by storm, and then the top dog at Sega publicly declaring that the Saturn wasn't Sega's future - talk about twisting the knife.

Sega Saturn - what could have been :(

I'm pretty ignorant of Sega consoles/history

Have Microsoft ever done anything similar? It seems Xbox has always done well (although they've only released 3 consoles), but am I right in thinking the Windows gaming platform got killed off?

Sega Saturn

Sega killed it here in summer 1998 (Deep Fear was the last game, released in June) and the company literally had no UK retail presence for over a year!

The writing was on the wall really with most third parties dropping it in 1998 and latter first party arcade ports (Sega Touring Car and House of the Dead) being abysmal.

It's a shame that by the time Panzer Dragoon Saga FINALLY released everyone had forgotten about the system.

The original Xbox released here in Feb 2002 and the 360 launched in Nov 2005, so they gave it less than 4 years before abandoning it.

I bought one with Halo 2 in 2004 with big expectations, within a year it was dead.

I'd say the most obvious example would be the Amstrad GX4000.

Image

Inside, it was just a CPC Plus, with the keyboard taken away and the only way to play games being a cartridge slot that had the same games as cassette, but cost tens of times more.

It was discontinued less than a year after it was launched, and only 27 games were released for it.

Possibly the worst thing about it was that the AC adaptors were faulty, and were liable to explode when used.

I think this was just a failure though and Amstrad didn't continue with another console so not really in the theme of the topic. I'd put forward the original GBA which got replaced by the superior (and actually usable in different lighting conditions) GBA SP.

Amstrad did continue making the rest of the Plus range, and they were particularly popular in France.

Amstrad also made the Mega PC a few years later which was similar to the Sega TeraDrive.

Apple Bandai Pippin

Maybe if Apple made a console now it would do better but would probably cost four times the amount of the others

Love my Vita. Use it most days and have tons of games for it. Had it since launch and still going strong some 5 yrs later (or is it 6?)

What is that thing? A footstool with a boomerang accessory? :D

The Vita is still technically strong in Japan, but more due to third party than anything. Can't say I recall any other console abandoned for the next in line, unless you can say the original DS for the DS Lite.
