I've tried VR once, at an event, and loved it, but the price has always been prohibitive. It's still really exotic to me! I'm not convinced that it's become normalised in the way you suggest.

No way am I getting a PSVR2 at this price though :(

The price seems in line with the high-end PC VR headsets, so I'm not super surprised at it. I was hoping Sony would take a hit (or more of a hit, maybe?) on the price to drive adoption, but given they just raised the PS5 price that was probably a pipe dream anyway. I was really hoping they were going to pull Half Life: Alyx out of the bag as part of their "this is why you should jump in day 1" push. Still got my fingers crossed that it'll arrive at some point, as that would definitely get me in line for one.

Spent £160 on my PSVR and it's been worth every penny as it felt like an affordable add-on for my launch PS4: ~£510 spent in total. But holy strawberry float, seeing that double in the space of nine years, even allowing for the better tech, is crazy. Especially without back compatibility.

The fact that there are other options out there now (including massively discounted PSVR 1 sets) means there are numerous cheaper entry point to VR if you want though. Even 3 years ago it was about £250 with move controllers or a pack of games (I forget which) during Black Friday I believe. And then the Quest 2 launched at £300 (it's £400 now mind) and sold mainstream numbers (15m + I seem to remember reading). That's a lot of people who are in to VR who already have a well-supported headset.

When PSVR 1 launched it was oculus rift development headset and fancy PC, trying to find an early 90's Virtuality machine at Alton Towers or nothing.

Ah, WiiU and Vita style mainstream ;)

I might reconsider getting PSVR1 now - I was always thinking it would be better to wait for PSVR2, but now with the price and backwards compat uncertainty I'm not sure.

Does Sony not pay attention to the current economic state of some places

I’m out! Way too much money, I played the original lots at first but haven’t bothered with it for over a year now.

PSVR1 is a fantastic entry level option.

Yes it's a bit limited technically these days and the tracking on it isn't great compared to more expensive and modern sets, but it's still worth a punt. Especially given the established library of games. Well worth a buy as long as you can get the Move Controllers to go with it.

Yeah, I think if anyone is genuinely surprised by the price they were either not paying attention to the specs or blissfully ignorant of how much these things cost as standard. The whole PSVR 1 package was only like a tenner shy of this at launch or something (it didn’t have the camera even included). But it also didn’t really do any numbers which is why they gave it a price cut not long after and started bundling aggressively.

I think we’re likely to see a similar course of action for this, but what Sony never seem to learn with their stupid peripheral platforms is that without the user base, the software dries up, which means less reasons to jump on it.

So right now, is it a bad price for what’s in the box? Not at all. But is it a bad price? Obviously. Like, anyone with half a brain knows that. I’m not really in the business of saying things that are blindingly obvious and don’t even need to be said, but I’m making an exception here because clearly this forum’s village idiot needs me to spell it out so he can stop trying to gooseberry fool up every thread trying to bait me with his infantile fanboy nonsense. It’s a shocking amount of money to fork out on such an overhyped medium. Doubly so in a closed ecosystem with strawberry floating £70 games. Whatever bonehead thought the market wanted this needs fired. It should deservedly go down in flames.

Sony couldn’t really be choosing a worse time to launch this, what the economic outlook across the world now ranging from terrible to properly terrible; to then throw it out there in February is also craziness. I can’t remember off the top of my head precisely, but it’s either the first or second worst shopping month of the year for tech retailers. Everyone is broke and often in debt following Christmas, the January sales have just ended, and the weather is usually awful, resulting in reduced footfall - if ever there was a product that needs demoing, it’s this.

Those with a PS5 is also considerably less than when the VR1 released on PS4, so retailers already know that this is a product they can only potentially sell to a few million customers in year 1 (and that's not happening with this). I don’t think they’ll have any issues selling it in the first month, maybe 2, but then it won’t shift at all.

Maybe Sony are just happy to scalp the early adopters and there will be a price crash very quickly (as was the case on their INZONE range, where up to 50 quid came off in about 3 months - though the RRP on headsets are much like electric toothbrushes: a joke).

I'm sometimes quite frugal but I think I will get one of these fairly early on if they're readily available. I've used VR at events and arcades in London and its incredible - so I think this is a luxury I'll get a lot of enjoyment out!....actually is this £530 all in? I'll need to get sensor bars or that camera thing won't I? :dread:

Slightly concerned about the price understandably excluding a lot of PlayStation's user base and thus will this be supported long term?

Thats all in.

When PSVR launched it was like the Wacky Races as I drove from shop to shop to try and secure 1 x PSVR headset, 1 x PSVR camera and 1 x set of move controllers. The initial revelation of playing it made it all worthwhile. Unfortunately, despite this tech being miles ahead of the 1st iteration, that "first time in VR" magic will be impossible to replace.

The question mark of Sony's support is a valid one (especially given the way they handled Vita), and it obviously is very dependent on uptake, but I believe the attach rate for the first iteration was very high (I think I own 90% of the Sony 1st party releases).

The price is high but the lack of appealing titles and backwards compatibility is perhaps the bigger issue for me.
