They usually have a 'This should be well visible, this should be just about visible and if you can see this bit, you're staring at a ******* lightbulb'. I also tend to find that much beyond the 'barely visual' brightness and everything is steeped in a horrifically ugly grey, which is far worse than atmospheric darkness.

True that but it then becomes visible for those of us it would hurt otherwise so I'm all for it.

Here's an idea, just imagine that's exactly what they're asking of you, adjust it until you can see nothing, then bump the brightness up by one notch. All of a sudden, you have yourself, barely visible. Not, not visible, it's one brighter, but it's still, barely visible.

The reason it's on a sliding scale and not one of four predefined settings is because you're supposed to use your eye and every TV is different, so a setting on one TV wouldn't work as well on another, and having only four settings would never cover all the TVs. Someone sitting pretty close to the TV would be able to make out details easier than someone sitting further back, so they might have it a bit darker, etc...

I've never seen one without a reference image, so I can't see what the problem with it is. You just toggle the slider until the thing is barely visible, a difference of a tweak left or right isn't really going to matter.

I'm not setting it too high. I'm setting it to the right brightness. Maybe my threshold as to what counts as 'barely visible' is higher, but if I set it to that then I often find I can't see a strawberry floating thing. A couple of notches above that is usually just right.

Besides, not being able to see anything is a shitty design choice. It's usually in games to provide atmosphere - you should still be able to play the game fine.

They always provide a reference image. Usually something grey inside a black square. When you can see the thing in the square that means visible. When you cant see it its not visible. You want to get it between the two.

Adjust the slider until it's hard (but not impossible) to see the icon. If you can still see it at the lowest setting, the brightness of your TV is way too high.

SUCCESS! You have calibrated the game for your TV. Your games will no longer look washed out and gooseberry fool.

Not really a horror game, but I had to turn up the brightness a lot when playing Fallout 3, I couldn't see a damn thing in some of the darker areas, and the pip boy light didn't help much at all. That game really could have done with some night vision goggles. You can say what you like about atmosphere and scares, or being a pansy, but at the end of the day you need to be able to see what you're doing to play a game.

That may have been a bit harsh, But I cannot comprehend that someone doesnt understand the concept of barely visible.

I tend to turn mine up quite high for the image/whatever to be barely visible. I think it's my tv that could be a notch too low on the ol' brightness or whatever, but *shrugs*

I think I know what Herbie is saying. The problem is that the contrast ratio of some screens is good enough that even if you turn all the settings right down you can still see the "barely visible" part so the phrase make no f**king sense. And then you have a white level that is clearly grey.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
