I've found a few interesting podcasts, like Ed Miliband's one, and of course the GRcade one, but want to try and find more, but don't really know where to go.

I've been googling podcast apps/services, and I don't really know how to compare them. There are plenty of reviews, but all they talk about are features like download management and the ability to skip/pick up where you left off. I can't seem to find anything that compare the libraries of content. All I can tell is they're all huge, and most of them seem to share a few big podcasts on their fetured/recommended pages. Is it more like different e-readers where the bigger releases will be on all the services? Are there any that'll offer recommendations based on your tastes and listening history? Or am I best off just getting recommendations from people and downloading them direct?

I use an iPhone and use the Overcast app. It’s decent enough, but the search leaves a lot to be desired unless you know what you are looking for.

Try searching Google for “best podcasts” along with whatever you are interested in (comedy, tech, history, movies etc) and see what ones people are recommending.

I’d recommend Hardcore History, the Parapod, My Dad Wrote a Porno and No Such Thing as a Fish. All either interesting, funny or both.

If you have an iPhone then Overcast is by far the best for this.

Basically anything with an RSS feed can be added to any podcast app so yeah you can just get recommendations and add whatever shows you want.

Basically, whichever app you choose will be able to find the same podcasts regardless. Are you after an app or actual podcast recommendations?

For apps, I use Pocket Casts (Android). Lovely aesthetic, very functional, simple to use.

For podcasts, well, it depends on your interests. What are you wanting to listen to people talk about? The ParaPod and Hardcore History are two of the more popular series that people here listen to.

So it doesn't matter what app I use, I can get any podcast? I thought these were like choosing between Amazon Prime and Netflix. It explains why I haven't been able to find anytthing about podcast libraries, then. :fp:

Not really sure what I'm after podcast wise, but it's good to know that the platform doesn't matter.

So does this mean the podcasts I've been manually downloading will work in one of the apps, too, or do they still only carry selected ones?

Whatever app you use will have a search function. You just search for the podcast you want and click away on the ones you want to download. It is so simple.

Anyone here listening to the New York Times podcast, Caliphate?

My only (slight) criticism is the lead journalist Rukmini Callimachi sounds a bit 'off' when providing insight but otherwise it's fantastic.

There are now a fair few podcast networks that house many of the best, or most professionally produced podcasts. Look for Gimlet or Radiotopia for some of the best podcasts.

I'd personally recommend:

99% Invisible - Everyday design
Snap Judgement - Human interest stories (Kismet is a good episode to start with)
Reply All - Internet culture stories (a litany of great episodes here: Long Distance, Today's The Day, The Bitcoin Hunter, Boy in Photo, INVCEL, The Case of the Phantom Caller)
Criminal - True crime stories (Melinda and Judy, Money Tree)
Slow Burn - Retelling of the Watergate scandal
What Trump Can Teach Us About Con Law - A professor of US Constitutional law uses Trump's tweets and actions show how constitutional law is only really enforced in a good faith manner.
Uncivil - History podcast on the American Civil War that tries to take apart the dilution of slavery's part in the Civil War and general American history

Oh god I've just listened to the first episode of Everything is Alive, a new podcast in which the host interviews an individual inanimate object played by an actor. The first episode is with a can of generic cola who laments not having been consumed yet, among other things.

It sounds dumb and it is but it's very entertaining.

I’ve been listening to Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Podcast (RHLSTP!!). Started at the beginning and only have about 3 left (Brian Blessed is next!).

Going to catch up on Adam Buxton’s podcast after.

Started listening to the Kermode and Mayo podcast a few weeks ago, but I think I liked it more when they had guest hosts on. Are they aware of how much they've made it sound like a cult? :shifty: is that the joke? "Are you a member of the church?" :dread:

Still, Kermode hates the Happytime Murders so I'm finding him a lot more bearable than I used to.

Are there any other good film review podcasts around?

I like Kermode and Mayo, but there are a lot of in-jokes. Still at least we can say hello to Jason Isaacs.

I’ve started listening to Revisionist History (oddly enough after Mayo mentioned it!). Only listened to the first couple of episodes but it seems decent. I’m so used to Hardcore History though that a 30-40 minute history show seems weird.

It is a joke, but one that's come about on itself and is now semi-serious. It does get a little odd. It's still the best film podcast around though.

Yep. I was walking to the gym and full on guffawed in some poor French lady's face.

"A' throw onion rings at sailors."

Best thing since his Sunderland song.

Relistening to Blueprint for Armageddon. Love it when Dan refers to the Kaiser of the time as "this really sub-par kind of guy".

Reminds me of that time when, in an essay, one of Corazon's students wrote that "Hitler seemed like a trustworthy guy".

The latest episode of Reply All is superb and terrifying. A deep investigation into how a woman's Snapchat account got hacked and the people behind it.
