With Pokemon celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Its got me thinking back to how I first got into the franchise

I remember seeing Pokémon red and blue in a couple of games magazines back when they had just came out and really liked the look of the game, So my mum took me into town to buy a copy but it was sold out everywhere. I remember trying a few times but alas every time we went they had no copies in stock

One night I was round my nans house with a few other family members and we were about to go home when my nan asked if I wanted to stay over the night as she had a present for me, that's when she handed me a copy of Pokémon Blue!!! I of course stayed the night as I had a super Nintendo set up in my nan's spare bedroom with a super Gameboy (didn't actually own a handheld GB at this point) and played the game all night  I then got hooked into the franchise and watched the cartoon and collected the CCG game cards

the only other Pokémon games I really got into were Snap, Silver and Platinum (last one I played actually)

I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the franchise, Pokemon Go looks like it could be massive

So GRcaders what are your Pokémon memories??

That's a great memory, magicm - it's just superb when little moments like that happen!

I have extremely limited experience with Pokemon; I picked up Pokemon Blue alongside my new GameBoy Color in 1999 but I've never played it beyond the first five minutes! I would like to try again with a Pokemon game but, the longer I've left it, the franchise seems to have grown bigger and there has never felt like a stepping-on point.

I'm thinking about getting Pokemon Blue when it's released for the 3DS Virtual Console this month. Do you think that it would still stand as a good game for a complete noob?

I'm planning on picking up Pokemon Yellow, I think they are great games to start with as they are not overly complicated with all the breeding and contests stuff. I think you'd really enjoy em once you get your teeth into it

I'd skip the GB games. None of the games are really tied together, storywise, so just go for the latest Pokemon game... Or Black/White, it's a great starting point.

People like to moan about the series not changing but the refinement from each "generation" has made the games a lot better. As great as these were at the time they're fairly rough now.

 To save time in future, could you please just list the games you have played for more than 5 minutes?

Pokemon HeartGold is IMO the definitive Pokemon. It includes a lot of the content from Red/Blue. (It's also really easy to emulate if you're so inclined.)

My greatest Pokémon memory is my old money making scheme. Loads of people at my high school were hugely into it (came out during my first year) and there were loads of rumours about "Pikablu" going around (perpetuated by screens of Marill, I think, from unaired episodes of the cartoon and a lot of unsubstantiated nonsense online).

I had one of those Action Replay cheat cards for my GBC that let you fiddle around with the levels and moveset of your Pokémon. So I made a Raichu named Pikablu, gave it 999 of all stats and a couple of strong water-based moves alongside the best electric ones and used the link cable cloning trick to sell them to people for £3.50 a pop  Told everyone I'd used the ridiculous methods online to catch it.

I bought so many sweets that year  Guess as a kid I was imaginative enough to come up with the plan but not enough to think of anything better to do with the money!

Pokemon is fantastic. A secretly megacomplex RPG unlike any other with a ridiculous level of metagame, hidden underneath a cutesy and loveable exterior, with a single player adventure that ends up being addictive as all hell.

I wish it was something all adults just played as default. The world would be a better place.

It's the only JRPG I ever enjoy playing and play to completion. I always end up getting bored playing Final Fantasy, Persona, Dragon Quest etc.

I'll never forget encountering a level 112 Goldbat in the school field and lost my mind. Over 100!!

My favourite Pokemon game is Silver, I also have Crystal which goes for £30+ :o I got stuck at some point so I'm going to replay it on gameboy player. I'm not sure if it needs a new battery. I've not finished X yet either.
