I've found I've succeeded on defeating an Articuno with 8 players, but no fewer than that. On Lugia, we ran out of time once with as many as 12 players, though I think some may have been just dodging to stay alive by the end.

As for catch rates, yeah they're low - I've caught two of both Lugia and Articuno now but I've been lucky. You have a better chance if your team has contributed most to defeating the Pokemon.

I've only been playing this for a couple of weeks, found that it's great for exercise as I've done a ton of walking since. But I have a couple of questions.

when choosing which of your Pokemon to evolve should you always pick the one with the highest CP? Or does it not matter?

Is there any reason to keep so many multiples, should I just transfer them to get a candy? I can't see myself doing anything with the weaker ones.

If you're arsed about gym battles and raids you can get your pokemon judged and it'll vaguely tell you how strong it is and whether it'll be good in battle.

Keep tons of multiples of ones like Pidgey, Caterpie, and Weedle since they take the lowest amount of candies to evolve. Once you have a lot then use a lucky egg (which doubles the XP you get from stuff for half an hour) then go through them all and evolve them for tons of XP

Ah right, oops I've been transferring my multiple pidgey's, natu etc to get an extra candy to put towards evolving what I assume are the stronger ones as they have higher CP ratings.

It's not all about cp. Click on the Pokemon, click appraise and it'll give you some feedback. Evolve or keep ones they rate as amazing, get rid of the rest. You may get a Pikachu which is 500 cp but when appraised it's average. Then one with 400 cp could be epic.

Bit more of a long winded and simple illustrative examples.

Your Pokemon don't have visible levels. They have a CP number. Basically this is the current value of all their stats in a "Combat Power" rating. (They do effectively have a level behind the scenes I'll come on to that).

The half circle bar shows their CP value and progress to maximum CP value (This maximum CP is based by on current level - again will come onto that).

Each Pokemon is different and CP values/max CP value will vary for each capture. One Weedle might be 4/25 and look much weaker with a barely complete bar, but it's actually better than the 7/8 one who's bar is nearly full - as it can grow stronger.

(A species will be capped at certain values though. That's why we're talking about specific Pokemon and IVs above. e.g. A Weedle at this level will have a potential max CP of 30 at this level [so the 25 one is pretty close to perfect] but a Dragonite will have a potential max CP of 50 at this level)

Every time you capture a Pokemon you get 3 Candies for it's species (or more if you capturing an evolved version. e.g. a Pidgey will give you 3, and Pidgeotto will give you 5)

You "power up" Pokemon by spending Candy and Stardust. (You get Stardust from capturing Pokemon. It is RARE AS SIN later when power ups can take 4000. Only use when you really want to).

So you can power up that 4/25 Weedle to 6/25, 8/25 etc all the way to 25/25 - but should you?

So Pokemon Level. It's effectively based on your trainer level. So at your current level that Weedle can go up to 25. If you level up it can now go up to ,say, 35. (It'll go from 4/25 to 4/35, or for instance 25/25 to 25/35).

But Weedles you capture will now be "up to 35" so you have a better chance of catching higher CP Pokemon as your trainer rank levels up. So it's probably not worth Powering up those Pokemon you catch now - because you'll easily get more powerful Pokemon when you level up trainer ranks. (i.e. you spent all your Stardust to make what's now a 25/35 and then you capture a 26/35 one!)

That's a very simple basic of why I'm saying to catch more - it's the quick simple way to get your Trainer level up, and most of the Pokemon you capture now (even if amazing) are likely to be quickly beaten.

Getting your trainer level up is the early priority.

(That's also why I'm saying hold off on Evolving, which takes Candy, but not Stardust. Evolving, especially when making new discoveries, is an excellent source of XP. Save it until you can blow a Lucky Egg (which doubles XP gains) and do lots. E.g. My last egg I evolved 35 Pidgeys. Should be 17.5k xp, egg made it 35k :)

It effectively also comes down to IVs which determine how "good" your Pokemon is for it's level (and will grow)

e.g A 50% IV Caterpie might go up to 100CP at your level, and 200CP at Max Level, but a 90% IV will go up to 130CP at your level and 250 CP at Max level

You can use tools etc to work out IVs of your Pokemon (I use PokeGenie). If you appraise your Pokemon (an option on each Pokemon screen) your team leader will give you a summary. It varies from team to team. Mystic guys for instance gives those with the best IVs (80%+) a wonderous ranting. (I think the others a amazing and spectacular)

Does any of that make sense? :)

Ok I think I get it more now. So as I'm only about two weeks in should I just keep walking around and capturing whatever I find and increase my trainer level. I didn't realise that I would find stronger Pokemon as my trainer level increased. I have noticed that in general the cp levels were rising on new Pokemon but I didn't know that was the reason. I'm never going to be playing this seriously or intensively but it is a bit of an addiction.

You could potentially find a 100% IV perfect Pokemon now - but you'd have to spend a lot of Candies/Stardust to level it up after you level up.

It might be worth appraising "decent" pokemon that might want long term for fighting (e.g. Magikarps :D t keep the best back to Evolve into Gyrados)- but yeah right now pootle about and level up is probably more important.

Tried to catch three Moltres after work today. They all escaped. :( Easier to defeat than the other legendaries I think, but no luck catching for me today.

Newby question. What's the point in fighting gym battles? As in what do you get for beating one or even all of them in the gym? Is it just about badges?

If your Pokemon is in a gym for a time you can earn coins to spend.

I got back in to this recently. Purchased a Datel Gotcha - basically Pokemon Plus with an auto mode, helps so much levelling up. Went from 26 to 31 in a month.

Really liked the last event, extra stardust becomes so valuable! Love the social and physical requirements of this game, so well suited to mobile.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Assuming you don't mean raids

Street cred? :P

You get XP.
You get more items from a gym you have a badge for (more per badge level) and you control. Useful it camping near one (Work-Gym gives 8-9 items with control and gold badge)
You get more Premium balls in Raid battles if your team controls the gym
You can feed berries to "your" gyms for xp and stardust.
Every 10 minutes you defend a gym, your pokemon earns 1 coin. (Max 50 per day). So one Pokemon defending for 8 hours 20 min will earn you the max. or 2 for 4 hour 10 etc,

The 50 limit is rewarded per day. E.g. I have 2 pokemon in 2 gyms that have been defending for 3 days. If both get knocked out per day, I'll earn 50 coins from one and 0 from the other. If the other was knocked out instead tomorrow it would bring back 50 coins (assuming nothing else happens)

Most people tend to put lots and lots of Pokemon in many gyms and hope that they get a steady stream of knockouts to get close to 50 coins each day

Safari Zones for Kanga and Unown have expanded. The Silph road reckons they've now got a 40k radius

Got my Zapdos this morning (90% :D). Glad to have all the legendaries (and Safari) done. Less worry about missing a Dex entry now and can go back to calmly playing!

When trying to work out which pokemon to evolve how do you decide, should you just go on which one has the highest CP as a rule?
