Pokemon games on the DS - Where do I start? I've never played one on any console. Are they all the same with different monsters or what's the craic?

The series has changed quite a lot but still has the same basic structure. I'd suggest Fire Red or Leaf green on GBA to start, or Gold/Silver (which was the pinnacle of the series IMO) if you have an old Gameboy Colour or GBA

I hadn't played one in years and years so I bought Diamond and a gigantic wonga players guide, I suggest you do the same

It might be worth importing Platinum from America or waiting until it's released here in May instead of getting Diamond. If you do decide to wait for it, it's worth following Ario's advice and starting with Fire Red/Leaf Green - you'll be able to carry over your Pokemon into Diamond/Platinum from these games too.

If you can though (and don't care about carrying over your Pokemon) it is worth playing Gold/Silver as well.
