Here’s what I chose first time through for each game (I’ve used most of them on subsequent runs though)

Gen 1 - Charmander, all very good starters though.
Gen 2 - Chikorita, again all solid, not as good as gen 1 options though.
Gen 3 - Treecko, except one run where I used Mudkip I’ve only used Treecko in the gen 3 games.
Gen 4 - Piplup , quite like the other 2 though but Piplup is one of my favourite starters of all the games so far.
Gen 5 - Oshawott, since seeing its final form I’ve never picked Oshawott since and it’s always been Snivy, Oshawott and Dewott are amazing Pokémon designs though.
Gen 6 - Chespin, only ever picked Chespin and I’m not a fan of any of the starters in this region, getting a gen 1 option so early on meant I could drop the intended starter very quickly!
Gen 7 - Rowlet, Rowlet is amazing  Others are poor, very poor in my opinion.
Gen 8 - Grookey, amazing first 2 stages and a so so last stage, much better than the other 2 though :dread:
Legends Arceus - Cyndaquil, in hindsight I should have gone for Rowlet, I’ll be choosing that whenever I can do a second run of it. Not that Cyndaquil is poor but everything seems to have crunch which wrecks Typhlosion in this

Gen 1: Bulbasaur + Squirtle + Charmander (Blue) + Pikachu (Yellow) + Pikachu (Let's Go Pikachu)
Gen 2: Totodile + Cyndaquil (Silver)
Gen 3: -
Gen 4: Piplup (Platinum) + Turtwig (Shining Pearl)
Gen 5: -
Gen 6: -
Gen 7: Popplio (Moon)
Gen 8: Scorbunny (Shield)

I couldn't tell you which starter I chose first in Blue, I restarted that game so many times and played enough with each starter to fully evolve them.

Of those, the good final evolution are from Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Cyndaquil and Turtwig (not that I played enough to get it). The others are all regrettably best in their original form.

Anyway I probably will get this game and want to pick Quaxly (nicknamed of course Don Quixote), giving me an overall water bias.

RetroCora wrote:Of those eight, the only ones that aren't really top tier are Tepig and Scorbunny for me. I didn't really like Cinderace being a footballing rabbit thing, but it didn't help the poor thing that I had Charizard, Blaziken and Incineroar alongside it showing up the design.

Blaziken is terrible tho

I actually love Gen 8 starters and their evos! Especially Rillaboom, haha.

But I'd still like to see more animal-form for final evo, it's been too long.

I’m going to say November 18th will be the launch date for this looking at the calendar anyway, nearly always releases on a Friday in mid November, obviously Arceus was the outlier but you have to wonder if plans changed for BDSP and Arceus and both of those should have come a few months earlier than they ended up releasing.

I thought that it might be too soon for gen 9 given that Arceus just came out but Sword/Shield we're released in 2019 so maybe it's not too bad. Of course, the proof will be in the final product so let's see how it shapes up.

I bounced off Sword/Shield and it felt like a chore to finish as I didn't seem as invested in the game as I had expected. I've stopped playing Pokémon Go so maybe that will help keep a new Pokémon game feeling fresh as I won't have been playing a game in the Pokémon universe so regularly by the time I pick this up.

Quaxly looks great but I'll very likely go for Fuecoco as I always go for the fire type as my starter.

Gen 5: Tepig originally, Oshawott in White 2
Gen 6: Froakie
Gen 7: Fire cat originally, seal thing in Ultra Moon.
Gen 8: Fire rabbit but they were all awful.

For possibly the first time I'm genuinely torn on which starter to pick.
I normally always pick the Fire Type based on looks alone but now....

strawberry floating hate the sobble line, Sobble is alright but form 2 and Intellion especially can get in the strawberry floating bin.

This was a nice surprise. Did anyone else get Mario Sunshine / Isle Delfino vibes?

It does seem soon (personally I'm still playing Isle of Armor!) so I think this is the nail in the coffin for the idea of me getting BDSP, and possibly even Arceus.

I know I'm in the minority but I'd be happy with broadly much of the same after Sw/Sh. More open world is a plus of course. I've not played Arceus but even if it's open like the DLC was (for Sw/Sh) that'd be welcome. I'd like to see a visual update but it's not a deal breaker IMO. Main thing I'd like is for them to put some effort in with the move animations:

Another couple of types wouldn't be amiss. 18 is a weird number to stick with. I'd go with Abnormal and Light.

Oh and if folk (not me) have been paying for years for Pokemon Home then they really owe you to at least ensure this doesn't release until all the Switch games can trade and battle with one another and are Home compatible.

Final thought: The names are a bit cringe, but I've thought that about prior generations too!

Gen 1: Charmander for the first few runs through the game with the occasion Squirtle in later replays
Gen 2: Totodile every single time
Gen 3: Torchic
Gen 4: Chimchar with piplup in later replays sometimes
Gen 5: Tepig originally, Oshawott in replays
Gen 6: Fennikin
Gen 7: scorebunny

I always tend to go for the fire unless I hate the look of the fire one or if the water one happens to be adorable , Totodile is the exception as I adore him.

My first-time starters were:
G1 - Pikachu (in Yellow) then Charmander (in FireRed)
G2 - Chikorita
G3 - Torchic
G4 - Chimchar
G5 - Oshawott
G6 - Chespin
G7 - Rowlet
G8 - not actually played it yet, but would probably go Grookey since Rillaboom is my favourite of the fully evolved ones
G9 - If it manages to tempt me back to the mainline games, probably Fuecoco (although if it does evolve into a snek rather than a gator then Quaxly may end up tempting me)

Water is always the superior typing, it just has a much better MU spread, and most people seem to think fire is the 'coolest' so it was free wins back in the day. Though I picked Chespin in gen 6 cause everyone I knew was picking Fennekin and Froakie and I wanted to be helpful.

Fun fact, Bulbasaur and Rowlet are the only dual-type starters.
