Two of my housemates, both who own a Switch and were very excited for this game, were completely turned off when I told them there are no wild battles and it is pokemon go style catching.

From this anecdotal evidence I conclude a lot of people are going to be disappointed with that change. It's completely at odds with what casual and long-returned fans are expecting.

I'm quite looking forward to trying out the new catching mechanics without the need for battling and I know a couple of people who feel the same way. I have no idea how much I'll enjoy it or if I'll miss the old mechanics but I'm certainly going to give them a try.

I'm surprised they haven't released the first couple of hours or so (or maybe upto the end of Brock's gym) as a demo, people who've been keeping up with footage of Let's Go will have seen a lot of this section of the game anyway so releasing a demo won't exactly ruin it for people sold on the game but would help the unsure people decide whether to get it or not. I can't remember how many weeks before release the previous couple of demos came out for SM/USUM, guess it's not impossible to think they may still release one.

That sounds like a good call, Robbo. I know very little about Pokemon and, as such a long-running series, it doesn't feel that welcoming to newcomers. This view may be a little off - I believe that all new Pokemon games start with the basics - but it does feel like this new game is a bit more "basic" than the standard titles (?) and a demo could help to draw in newer players.

This is looking in part like it would be a decent first foray into the series, simpler mechanics to play with (pretty sure there's no IV's or EV's), easier catching due to no battling (on one hand at least, having never played Pokémon Go the catching could be awful!) and only having the original Pokémon to catch. Having been there from the start of the series I'd be tempted to say a first foray into the series really should be one of the VC releases of Red/Blue/Yellow as I feel they've got a certain charm to them, a much more polished first entry would be Gold/Silver/Crystal though, they're all great games that are relativly easy to play though, so you couldn't really go wrong about which gen to jump in on.

As for a demo I feel like it'd help the undecided as well, let them know if they could stomach a full game of the mechanics etc. Reckon there's still chance for it to happen as well.

Thanks for the info, Robbo! I'm currently watching Jazzem stream and the guys on there are saying a similar thing about this Lets Go game being a decent jumping on point. Will have a think.

I fully admit to not being the biggest charm of retro gaming, but I wouldn’t necessarily agree. The older games are unbalanced, slow (no Running Shoes!), and... in general, just old! If you do like your retro gaming and can appreciate what was done at the time then go ahead, dive in: just don’t give up on the series if you find them a bit clunky.

The unbalanced nature of Gen 1 is part of the charm in my opinion :D I do agree though, if you don't like the retro games then the latest gen are the best starting point. Playing gen 1 just lets you appreciate how far the series has progressed, something great about getting constant critical hits with slash on a fast Pokémon for example.

I'd probably recommend starting with HeartGold/SoulSilver or Black/White.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver would be a good starting point but last time I looked even used prices were on the high side, have they dropped recently?

Wonder how it'll work for Bulbasaur and the other stage 1/2 starter Pokémon. Unless you can breed (which I thought they'd already said you can't) or catch multiple ones of Bulbasaur/Charmander/Squirtle?

Same with Mew...... Does that mean it'll appear once you've got the other 150 as not everyone will want the Poké ball plus with the new in.

All in all it'll be a bit of a trek but not awful post game content and it'll make you use all of your Pokémon if you want to beat them all.

Really looking forward to playing this

Will this have any sort of Pokemon league (in-game or online) or battle frontier style options? I was hoping they would have a knockout style Pokemon league and not just the Elite 4

Now that would be great, an anime style Pokémon league :)

They've not mentioned anything like battle frontier yet so we have no idea.

I've played several pokemon games and I've never thought about or noticed IVs or EVs, I don't think they are a barrier to entry.

Balance also isn't an issue when every pokemon game is easy (and can always be broken by just using your starter 'mon)

I never worry about IV's or EV's for normal play throughs either, so they're not a barrier to entry for single player but they do seem essential for online play, so if the Let's Go games can get more people interested in the competitive side of things without the need for worrying about IV's/EV's them it wouldn't be a bad thing in my opinion, I wonder if this might me the norm going forwards though? So an online battle is much more dependent on having move-sets with counters rather than who has the slightly higher stat due to IV's (I suppose they could keep EV's as a Pokémon could have different use cases dependant on its EV spread). When I've played online in the past I've EV trained my team but never worried about IV's, spending ages hatching eggs doesn't exactly scream fun to me

To your second point, yes it's very easy to beat the game just using your starter Pokémon, as at the end of the day the overall level is still the main advantage. Only game/Pokémon I've not tried is GSC with Meganium, keep meaning to give Crystal a try just using Meganium, reckon most of it would be pretty easy but I think Red could actually pose a bit of a challenge (unless you top up your stats with X items and tank against Pikachu).

I'm sure that there are IVs in Let's Go. I'm not sure about EVs. IVs are definitely in Go but not EVs.

Only for HP, Attack and Defend and 15 instead of 31, but yeah.

They might add in EVs in Let's Go, seems candies you get is like that, possibly
