Okay... I believe that's it's "a good thing" to repeatedly capture the same type of Pokémon to build up your "catch combo"? I've just collected twenty consecutive Pidgeys... am I doing it right?

Edit: Dang it! A Rattata come charging at me and ended my combo run!

Man, this is terrific fun! I've not experienced this style of gameplay before and the simply-structured opening is great for new players. I like the little touches; I'm now able to select a Pokemon to run along beside me  .

If anyone has expertise about my combo-query it'd be much appreciated, as I don't know if this is something I should try to be doing or not. Also... now that I have loads of Pidgeys, should I be "getting rid of sone of them" in some way?

You're right about the combo. It gives you a boost in experience points and makes it more likely that you'll catch a stronger version of that Pokémon. In fact, once you hit a chain of 31, you're guaranteed to catch a Pokémon of that type with at least four perfect IVs. Long combos even make it more likely that rarer wild Pokémon will appear.

You can get rid of your weaker Pokémon by clicking on one and selecting to transfer it/send it to the Professor (I can't remember what exactly it's called). Once you select the option, you can select more Pokémon to transfer before pressing Y to actually sent them away. There's an IV checker somewhere (I think that it's on route 24/25) that you can use to get a better idea of which ones to transfer.

I'm really enjoying the game - the lack of wild battles or random encounters actually makes it less tedious to play and a wonderful way to relive such a classic. I just arrived at Pewter City last night but my Pikachu has double kick and I have quite a strong Oddish so Brock shouldn't be much trouble.

I'm toying with either going for my classic Red team (Charizard, Pidgeot, Vileplume, Gyarados, Alakazam and one that I can't remember  ) or the standard team that I would have had for Yellow had I played it more (Pikachu, Venasaur, Blastoise, Charizard, Alakazam and Pidgeot). Given that I've already got Oddish, I might mix it up and have Pikachu in my Red team and swap Charizard for Arcanine - I always wanted on in my team :P

Just let the rattata go and your steak remains unbroken.

I got a catch steak of 12 Clefairy, which caused a Chancey and a Clefable to spawn.

In other news: The rewards for carrying a Pokémon in the Pokeball plus are very generous. If you hook it up to Go! (finally got that to work) even more so. I've put Magikarp in mine.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I really hope they do as well, I'd love to see Johto in HD

Yeah it would be awesome and day/night real-time too. Also, the owners who have the Poke Ball could get exclusive Pokemon Celebi. :datass:

I finally caught my first Celebi in Crystal when I completed my Meganium only run, I remembered hearing about the GS Ball but thought it had been canned even in the re release of Crystal on the eShop. But yes, that'd make for a nice gift as well for new and existing Poké ball plus owners if they put Celebi inside of it.

If they did do this I'd like a slightly more drawn out day/night cycle, nothing over the top but maybe dawn-day-dusk-night. I really hope this becomes a thing and we'll see a let's go set in Johto in 2020.

Yeah it's really nice that, as Parksey said you don't run into a cave and get a constant onslaught of Zubat every few steps, a remarkable improvement that I hope carries over to the 2019 game.

As for the team, I've going for a mainly traditional yellow team of Pikachu, Venasaur, Charizard, Blastoise and then a couple I've not used before in Nidoking and Mr Mime. That's the one annoying thing about gen 1 in general for myself, I always find myself coming back to the same old reliable team  especially in yellow (which this basically is). Although with Pikachu getting the HM moves I've been able to play a little more with the last two slots as one would have normally been a Pidgeot (for fly and being generally decent) and the other a HM slave. I'd be more inclined to use Pokémon like Alakazam, Gengar, Golem etc if they worked out a way of doing the trade evolutions in your own game, maybe have an NPC available to trade it back to you once it's hit a certain level?

Still a bit dumbfounded that you can't battle wild pokemon. Yes there are plenty of trainers to battle, but those are a finite number. In the late game, are you supposed to level up pokemon by catching others when the majority of trainers have been beaten?

I am enjoying the game, but wish they hadn't implemented the Go stuff quite as much as they have (The lack of random battles is cool with me, but let me weaken tough pokemon in order to catch them instead of having to buy berries to feed them).

Thanks, Dragon. I will try and get a combo going again...

Ah! When I next play I will look into this aspect, Dragon.

Can you not battle the Coach Trainers repeatedly? I thought you could and they scale to your level?

Just pulverized Brock with my Eevee 8-) At what point can I start buying more outfits for us both? Gonna be the sharpest team in Kanto.

Baffled by how to style their hair, though.

No idea re the hair styles either, not seen anything mentioned about it on my journey so far! On the outfits, I've found that you get given them, I've not found anywhere to buy them yet unless it's in one of the bigger cities like Saffron or Celadon?

Do you still need to trade certain pokemon to evolve them in this (Kadabra etc) or is that gone?

I've reached Cerulean City. I didn't manage to find an Onix in Mt Moon, but I did find a Chansey. It's very cute hopping along behind you.

Just gonna dive in for a bit of Poke-action whilst tea is cooking. I want to sort out my roster and send my collected weaker Pokemon to Professor Oak.

The IV checker is actually on route 11 so it'll be a bit of time until you get there so I'd just focus on getting the type advantage for now.

No, you don't need to follow them in numerical order, it does a pretty decent job of pointing you in the right direction via roadblocks (like the bush you need to chop down or story events).
