Ah, new Pokemon.
Many of the complaints that crop up every new gen can be raised here. It's fundamentally the same principle game, though Alola as a region and the way it's structured certainly does break away from the formula that's been established over the last two decades. And truth be told? I don't want them to shake up the formula too drastically. Pokemon at its core has been a coming-of-age tale and exploring the wrld surrounding us, and early on Moon does that as well as any title has. If anything I would argue that the Pokemon series is my go-to example of worldbuilding and encouraging players to explore.
It's just so pleasant. There's no overarching doomsday device spurring events onwards, no tragic backstory that gives the player character 'depth' nor an overly convoluted reason for why the player is on an adventure. You move to a new place. It looks cool here. There's plenty to see and do. Go and do that.
It's lovely to get a game that's so enthusiastic and encouraging about adventure. This is why I keep coming back to the series.
As for the game itself? I really like the variety of Pokemon that can be caught so early on. I have a squad of six right now that could feasibly run through to the end of the game as they cover a lot of bases:
Growlet (grass starters 4 lyf)
Growlithe
Magnemite
Munchlax
Abra
MakuhitaThat will obviously get rotated as the game goes on, but it's great to have variety and options presented within the opening hours of the game.
