Jamaicans are annoyed because it's like McDonalds deciding to make English Sunday roast. Except it's all deep fried and the Yorkshire puddings are made from potato. And now people all over the world will think this is what English Sunday roasts are and call you stupid and petty if you insist the potatoes must be trusted instead of fried.
I don't think people have a problem with Jamie making Jamaican food, but you've got to have some respect for the actual recipe. It apparently has none of the ingredients that would be in jerk seasoning, and it's dubious to use it to describe rice.

You are aware that i wasn't being serious right?

That said, there's so much stupidity around these days that it wouldn't surprise me if someone did actually accuse him of it.

I never trust potatoes, shifty looking bastards.

I really hate people who complain about "cultural appropriation"

If we really are going to have an accepting society that embraces all cultures without division (the melting pot) then people should be free to adopt whichever cultural aspects they please.

I'm well aware that there's no such thing as "jerk rice", but that's beside the point.

"Because the people making the most money from Jamaican culture ain't actually Jamaican. How is this so strawberry floatin hard to understand??"

Hmm, let's enshrine into law that only people of Jamaican origin can make jerk chicken, let's see how that goes down in terms of exclusivity, twat.

To me "Worcestershire vinegar" is purely a product combing specific ingredients, who gives a strawberry float where it comes from.

No one complains when their KENTUCKY Fried Chicken hasn't been served to them by a bunch of rednecks which, in rare occasions, is actually the case.

That is actually the entire point, if he had made jerk chicken using actual jerk ingredients then that would be fine and that would be embracing the melting pot. Instead he has made a rice dish but called it jerk rice to piggyback on the popularity of that style of cooking. He has appropriated the name and applied it to something else, when there was no need to do that.

Are you comparing being invited to an event and being asked to wear clothes of that culture, to selling a commercial product to try and profit from another's culture?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I hate when countries try to claim ownership of something too.

It's not Jamaican, if it were possible to trace its roots back to the day of inception, you'll most likely find a single individual creating it.

Why do the right always jump to "you want to ban it!!!"? No-one wants to ban Jamie Oliver from naming his crappy rice dish however he likes. People are saying "I think Jamie Oliver is being disrespectful, and I think you should buy authentic Jamaican food instead". There's no weird SJW conspiracy to "enshrine into law" that Jamie Oliver can't make spicy rice.

Apart from a member of parliament saying it "needs to stop".

Did that MP say "I am drafting legislation to prevent Jamie Oliver from using the term 'jerk'" or did they just express their opinion that it was a bad thing? If the former, what is the full statement and what was the proposed scope and details of their legislation? If the latter, what's wrong with that?

What appalling reasoning.

Jamaican jerk cooking started with slaves so it would never be possible to tie it down to a “single individual”. But we do know that it is Jamaican in origin.

Nobody is suggesting that only Jamaicans can make jerk chicken, what Dawn Butler was saying was that jerk rice is not a thing and Jamie Oliver ought to respect what the dish is and not try and flog rice off of the back of Jamaican culture. Nobody has talked of a ban. Nobody has said non-Jamaicans can’t make or sell jerk chicken.

Personally I dislike a lot of the accusations of cultural appropriation. I don’t think it is helpful to criticise people for how they style their hair, or for the music they are making or the way they are dressing (as long as it is not in a piss taking way). This story was slightly different though, Jamie Oliver is just mashing words together and pretending that his product is associated with a culture, when he hasn’t even done the homework to find out what it is.

Considering how many mass produced products he's licensing out worldwide these days (what do you mean you've never tried Jamie's frozen fish cakes from Findus?!) is everyone sure he even knows it exists?
