Remember when Selena Gomez's Same Old Love came out and you were so sure you recognized the sound of the beat and then you realized it was basically the Lindblum theme in notes and tone and then you could rest easy? Me too!

And now there's that new Ariana Grande song whose beat and instrument (of the chorus/hook) is so familiar but you can't quite place it?

Me too!

I'm pretty sure it's a game though, and that it's very very similar.

Any other notable examples whilst we're on the topic? I like making links :D

I always think of this example:

Someone shared this with me a while back and I could never shake the notion that the widely guitar bit sounds just like something from early Mega Man.

The whole song gives me Earthbound vibes, but skip to 2:50 and listen for those squid sisters from Splatoon in the background.

How about pop-music actually commissioned for a video game?

Time for this old gem

Course, it turned out he did do the some of the music before his kiddy interference made SEGA nervous and they pulled his credit.

Personally, I always thought

sounded like

I used to think this sampled music from Yoshi's Story or something.

This sounds like loads of 8-bit game samples mashed together.

Ooh great thread, first thing that comes to mind is this chiptune ass sounding intro

This sounds like a sega song, I mean the beats for this could be straight out of Sonic CD?

Pills by St Vincent is literally just her singing over a tune from the original Pokemon games.

Jazzem posted a song ages ago that was meant to be the music for ice cap zone. I will see if I can find it.

Edit:

I do believe is correct.

This must be fate, because you posting that (as first reply no less!) gave me the link I was struggling with:

The hook music from

...and now I'm :D

Also some great shouts in here, really enjoying.

And of course there's also

...which supposedly samples:

(at around 50 seconds)

Though I think that's a little tenuous as it seems like a fairly simple motif, and the DK one has those notes that sound even closer to the swells in Night on Bald Mountain :?:

Not exactly on topic, but I always think this would fit Crash Bandicoot boss music.

The chorus music on Hanging tree on Songs for the deaf(QOTSA) sounds like a bad guy battle tune on super Mario 2 on the nes. I defy you to say I'm wrong.

Rapidly-greying is Mediocre to Average at games :fp:

There's a Lady Gaga song that sounds like a slightly slower version of this:

And then it was used for the trailer for the original Little Big Planet, if I remember correctly.

:) So meta.

This is a great shout - is it just a common, nursery-thyme-style scale or mode or something? So similar.

That mini-boss music comparison sounds much more like the (more iconic) 4-chord Bond theme, I reckon.
