Hi GR.

So we are only just about to switch over to the wonderful domain of digital TV in the meridian, and im wondering if there are any blatant brands i should/shouldn't avoid.

Thanks :)

If you fancy going for something a bit special I highly recommend getting a Humax. We have 2 in the house and they are both terrific. They are expensive but well worth it.

How are you not already on freeview?

The only real difference between the boxes is the UI and the best way to find which you prefer is to go to a TV shop and give them a go.

Thanks for the posts guys :)

Unfortunately my house has always been in some kind of dead spot in terms of satellite reception, and the actual house would have required too many bends in the signal wire to fetch a solid picture. So no, no sky, and no freeview (although i cant remember the specific reason 4 years ago when we tried to get it then) can you imagine, im still on four channels.

I'm not sure if there is one box to rule them all or what, but im gonna have to switch to digital within the next 4 weeks, so i gotta do something. Its worth noting my TV is a fat CRT [good blacks] so its not got a digital receiver built in.

Humax looks great, but definitely too pricey for now.

I am aware the main differences between the boxes [to fetch freeview] is basically the UI, so I'm just checking what you guys suggest before i make any purchases.

I think i will have to just go to Comet like you say. I try and avoid high street retail at all costs for multiple reasons but youre right, its the best way to just see which one feels best.

Thanks again for the advice guys :D

The cost of a straight forward box is pretty minimal now, so buying one on the high street should be fine.

Surprised at the lack of satellite reception, is that true for free sat as well as Sky?

Presumably cable (ie Virgin) is out of the question, but if all else fails you could get the BT Internet TV jobby.

I've got this one and it's really good. Not too expensive either. Obviously the HD isn't going to be of much use to you at the moment, but when you eventually upgrade to an LED or a plasma then you've got the option of HD at no extra cost.
