Oh 100%. You can take all your "innovative design" and cram it into a fleshy vagina door if it's not making the game fun. And Prey 2017, for me, has not been fun.

The old prey I didn't get on with. I'd like to try it again, but I don't own it.

I would honestly argue that nothing in the first 3-4 hours I've played of 2017 has impressed me as much as the opening scene of 2006 did. That alien abduction to 'dont fear the reaper' was just so memorable. And all the portal stuff it did long before Portal ever came out, man I actually really just want to replay that game now

See the Waypoint podcast held that up as a positive, that Prey 2017 didn't need to rely on set pieces and overblown dramatics. I can see what they're saying but I've just found it dull. From the moment you break out of the intro to where I am now towards the end there's been not a single memorable moment. Sometimes in games these moments come from gameplay, like the first time I took down a Thunderjaw in Horizon or discovering a new method to take out a Big Daddy. Prey doesn't have those either as the combat is just so terrible. So all you're left with is finding new ways to open doors which is fine and dandy until you discover all the methods: hacking, finding a vent, using the crossbow or morphing. Rinse and repeat.

There's a beta update out on Steam which fixes NPC problems and I think it solved that black texture bug. Another way is selecting a preset graphics profile, for some reason mine was set to custom so just switched to low and back to ultra and sorted.

Heard John Carpenter tweeted about his enjoyment of the game

Yeah, I can get why he would like it!

I had a blast with this! I haven't enjoyed a game like this since Dishonered and before that Bioshock. No surprise there given the developers pedigree. I loved the slow paced nature and mystery of Talos and the staff stories, as well as the paranoid threat of the Typon.

strawberry floating game was hard!

I'll formulate my thoughts on the game proper later on, but I loved so many things about the game. The strawberry floating loading screens not so much! I didn't really have much issues with the combat on PC, however I did try the PS4 demo and it was terrible compared to the PC. Heard they patched it since then though.

If you haven't finished it I would definitely stick around until after the credits.

I've just finished the game myself. It's not perfect there's some things I think they implemented half-cocked.

The Nightmare encounters feel poorly done. Majority of the time I'd just carry on my business whilst the timer counted down.
The end mission is essentially you running from one end of Talos to the other. A grand finale with a fight against the Apex Typhon would have been nice.

But overall I had a blast it's atmospheric, the plot was simple yet effective and the combat was hugely enjoyable. I didn't make much use of the Typhon abilities so I think come a second playthrough I'll go down that route instead.

I clocked in about thirty-five hours on PC. I did restart the game about ten hours in as I realized I missed probably the most effective weapon in the game (Q Beam) which really should have been put in a place you couldn't miss it but oh well I'll put that down to my own stupidity.

If I had to give it a rating:

8.5/10

I'm actually really glad they didn't do that.
There was a segment in the game (an audio log I think) about a character actually looking into the darkness of space between the stars, and they had a impression that the darkness was looking back at them with a feeling of utter hate.

When the Apex Typon appears it's like some Cthulhuian nightmare that H.P. Lovecraft would come up with. I'm sick to the back teeth of half arsed boss fights in games and it would have taken away the scale and potent of the creature. It could only really go the way of Ripley (Alien) or MacReady (The Thing), Blow this gooseberry fool up and (hopefully) take it down with us!

To be honest, I've disliked it so much thus far I'm seriously tempted to just quit and watch the rest on a Let's Play.

I've hit the point where Dahlarrives. How long left is there?

About 3 hours but the game becomes more difficult because those military bots are a pain in the arse! The Disruptor Stun Gun and Q Beam melts them though.

Urgh, harder? The strawberry float? The game was already testing my patience with it's utter trainwreck of a combat system. I'll have a bash later but I'm not sure if I can get through it.

Given up on this, watched the endings on Youtube. I found nothing to like, let alone love. The story was dull, the immersive sim aspects bland, the setting original but, yes, bland and the combat inexcusably awful.

5/10, a massive disappointment.

Oh, man, it's disappointing to hear your views of the game, guys. I held off from launch but I'd still like to play it as the premise of the game appeals and the environments look pretty cool. I will wait for a price drop on the PS4 download version.

I really enjoyed this. Don't get the complaints about the combat (at least with a mouse and keyboard at a high frame rate), it felt pretty good to me. Especially the shotgun. The station is a fun space to discover that always felt like it rewarded exploration and encouraged you to do it in a manner of your choosing. The narrative kept me engaged throughout, from the mystery of the main plot to the smaller threads in side quests and audio/text logs. It's all a lot better written than most games that attempt to flesh out their world with collectable narrative bits and pieces. It finishes strong too and there's a fun alternate ending you can get early on that plays with your exceptions of what's to come in a cool way. Damn good soundtrack too, with more fine work from Mick Gordan.

My only real issue with the game is the lack of a proper fast travel system combined with respawning enemies. At a certain point I just gave up on doing side quests because it became too much of a chore to trek back and either waste a bunch of resources fighting enemies or take damage running past them.

Soundtrack is the only good thing so far.

And the trophy for comitting suicide.

Just started this, played about two hours or so tonight. It's ticking a lot of my boxes so far - encouraging exploration and player agency, interesting premise, lots of things to interact with and hints that support for player authored solutions was in mind during development. Time will tell whether this is worthy of the System Shock comparisons or if it falls into the Bioshock category of dumbing things down too far.

I thought the first Prey was gooseberry fool and the stuff released for the sequel never excited me so I couldn't give two hoots about this highjacking the license, I'm just happy that more games are coming out that are at least attempting to pull themselves up on the coat tails of Looking Glass after all these years.

It's already on offer at £35 on the PS Store; or £32 via CDkeys. That's still a fiver more than the retail version now.

Edit: Albeit Amazon's £27 price is for Prime subscribers only :fp: .

Played the demo this weekend. Very BioShock, which is no bad thing of course.

Just like BioShock, the setting is stunning, the Art Deco-ish architecture is pretty lovely and the guns/powers seem pretty interesting (suitably meaty). The story seems pretty cool as well.

Considering all that, I was surprised that the reviews came in around 80%. Is this one those games that's better than the reviews state?

No. As previously stated I pretty much hated it, mainly due to the awful combat and confusing mix of systems.

Is this a direct sequel to the original Prey or a reboot?
