Just like BioShock, the setting is stunning, the Art Deco-ish architecture is pretty lovely and the guns/powers seem pretty interesting (suitably meaty). The story seems pretty cool as well.

Considering all that, I was surprised that the reviews came in around 80%. Is this one those games that's better than the reviews state?

I loved it, by far my favourite game of the year so far. If you're a fan of the "Immersive Sim" genre, particularly classics like System Shock 2, then there is a whole lot to like about Prey.

Complete reboot that has nothing to do with the original.

I'm not a regular anymore but haven't you historically had some controversial opinions on games?! ;-)

But yeah, thanks for the feedback. Definitely going to pick this up at some point. Do have reservations about the AI and potentially repetitive enemies but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I don't know! Really I don't. Would be interesting if I had that reputation though.

With this one though, I deffo recognise that I'm against the grain somewhat. I wish I could articulate what it was that put me on edge about the whole thing. I tried to write a bit for the GRcade front-page on it, but I couldn't get a handle on what exactly it was that made it so frustrating a game for me. Nothing seemed to click; not the layout, not the story, not the design, not the characters. Everything was ever so slightly off. Pair that with some of the worst combat I've experienced in a AAA game in ages, and I found nothing to enjoy.

Which I hate. I love arkane's output, I loved the Shock games, I love Deus Ex. But this, this was a huge dud for me.

I'm not sure where you're coming from. So far it's been great. The combat isn't the best but it's not terrible. I just wish you didn't have to fight so many of those annoying flying robots. And no human enemies (so far at least) is a little disappointing.

The opening of the game was incredible, such good vibes uncovering that first level. I just got into a horrible lull in what I thought was the finale, but it seems there's more and it's picked up a lot. I think the biggest problem I have with these recent immersive sim games is how 'flat' they are, in that once you understand the systems there's rarely anything left to surprise you. It's kind of in their nature, I suppose, and there are exceptions, but I wish the gameplay evolved more as the game progressed.

strawberry float yeah, if they are finally doing DLC for this I will be all over it! Was worried it had been abandoned after the seemingly disappointing sales of the game last year.

In a year that had Zelda and Mario this was still probably my GOTY for 2017.

Beat this last week and I loved it. In fact, I'm heavily contemplating replaying it again, now that I have a better handle on the systems in it. I'd like to try the Typhoon abilities. Such a good game, I was a bit disappointed in it at the beginning because I'm a huge Dishonored fan, but the more you play it, the more you realise just how wonderfully designed it is.

More DLC is awesome. I hope it is like Death of the Outsider in that there is a disc version.

I picked this up for 12 quid as I quite liked the demo. I'll probably start it soon as the game I'm currently playing is whipping my butt.

I dont know how this game fell off my radar so quickly. Although I have only just gotten round to playing Dishonoured 2, Arkane are a studio that I would normally keep an eye on.

A quick look through this thread and it seems like Taf in particular had problems with the combat which is easily the worst part of the Dishonoured games. As long as it has the excellent world building and Arkane's 'chunky' style in a space station, I will love it.

You have no idea how much I want to go on a rant every time someone says they enjoyed this.

But no. That would be pointless, and I grudgingly realise that other opinions than my own are available.

It's real bad.

EDIT: strawberry float it, I'm reinstalling this. See if I was right or just angry.

lol gay people are funny

For the record, I disliked the combat (genuinely terrible) the station (waaaay too open with little to no guidance and a terrible map) and the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed by information (the side stories were interesting but they were presented so haphazardly and involved so many different, faceless characters that they all melded together to form a huge unknowable pile of sludge).

I'm genuinely interested to see if I still have these opinions after another go (also, how far in I get before giving up).

Did you not find this with Dishonoured? There is so much to read in D2 that it find overwhelming but it's normally interesting at least.

The combat is not the strongest point but it is ridiculous to describe it as "genuinely terrible", and suggesting the station as a negative point in Prey?

The design of the station in this is simply stunning - in terms of the physical layout, the visual design, the enabling of multiple approaches, the environmental story telling and world building, the freedom it allows you to explore and find your own ways to progress (and not necessarily in the sequence the designers/plot intended). I cannot think of many better designed play spaces in anything from the last 5+ years.

I always found the station quite easy to navigate around really, I can't think of a single time I ever got lost or couldn't find where I wanted to go.

I’m with Taf all the way. I tried my very best to love this as it’s right up my alley but I always felt like I was just...wrestling with it, in some perpetual constant struggle. The open-ended nature is to its detriment, and there’s never a point (in my experience) where you have any feeling of empowerment. The level ups are a touch too few, the weapons are awful, the combat is.

What might have helped me is that I played this shortly after finishing Alien Isolation, so I was still kind of in that mindset of being underpowered and vulnerable when playing a game and where stealth was the best approach, so never really being a super badass didn't bother me too much.

I'll admit that unlike Dishonoured though I think you're a little more limited in ways you can approach situations in Prey. There was definitely a far greater bias towards stealth rather than combat in Prey, whereas Dishonoured gave you a bit more freedom to choose between them. I'd probably say Prey is closer to Thief than Dishonoured in some ways.

It's obviously ridiculous to you, but I genuinely found it intolerable. The enemies are interminably dull, the weapons ineffective and uninteresting and the less said about the forced anti-gravity combat situations the better.

Hime wrote:Did you not find this with Dishonoured? There is so much to read in D2 that it find overwhelming but it's normally interesting at least.

No, and this is the point. Dishonoured handled it's mood text and side stories incredibly well and most importantly, efficiently. The stories were affecting but brief. In Prey, each thread winds through the game entire and there are many, many threads. Every time I found a new entry I'd have to go back into the menus and dig out the last piece I got which could have been 10 hours before.

Well said, it really did feel like playing the damn thing was a struggle from beginning to end.
