Imagine actually caring about reflections enough to make a whole post about them.

Lighting is quite important for setting mood in horror games and thrillers.

I was being totally serious with my post regarding it looking fine and being a good game which I'm enjoying. Not once have I thought "hey there's no shadow or reflection there omg the game sucks !!11!!"

Those little bastard Mimics do a good enough job setting the mood when one scuttles off screen out of sight and becomes a stationary object.

Is this game more abut exploration/puzzle solving than combat? I kind of get board easily with games that requires looting rooms and reading messages. Like Deus Ex Human Rev and Mankind Divided are good games, i love the setting and for the same reasons Prey interests me. But man, you spend so much time just looking around rooms and reading messages. Is this a slow paced game?

Yep pretty much!
It's quite slow paced but the tension is always high as the Typhon are quick to kill you. When you are engaged in combat though the action is quick, as they move about quite fast. I'm finding the game pretty tough tbh, but I'm really enjoying the Hell out of it. The best game I've played so far this year, which granted isn't a big deal as I haven't played many of the new releases, but I've always loved these types of games.

Well, I ended up buying it because I do love games/films set in space. So will see how it goes. Was watching this guy playing on twitch and yea, it does seem slow paced, but hopefully it will hold my interest. Weapons/environments look cool so exploration should be a plus factor at least.

I've just spent 9 hours over two days playing this - I have no idea how far through I am in the grand scheme of things, but the very fact this game has hooked me and kept me playing speaks volumes. These days, that's increasingly rare. I got the PS4 version and I'm playing on my PS4 Pro. I still have a long way to go and I haven't touched any of the side quests yet.

So what is this game? A System Shock 2 for our times? A distant cousin of Half Life? It can certainly feel that way. But I see it as something different. I'll put it this way: If you were in love with the 'haunted house in space' that was Alien Isolation you are in for a real treat with Prey. What's that? You love huge, beautifully designed, slightly worse-for-wear all-but-abandoned space stations? You love the thrill of exploration laced with a constant existential danger? You like to spend time noodling about in your menu system, levelling up, reading data files, catching some plotline and backstory?

Arkane have knocked it out of the park here - Prey is a triumph of game design. Not for its combat (meh), not even really for its story (so-so), but for its sheer dedication to consistent, coherent aesthetic design: these game levels are staggeringly good-looking at every turn. The CryEngine sings with dynamic light, shadow and particle effects (although the loading times are, as usual with CryEngine, tedious) and studied, accomplished design. It's hard to place the look they were going for - retro 50s/60s Space Race Chic? - as it seems to be an amalgam of influences, from Art Deco to something more familiar and future-industrial. Sometimes it looks like The Shining's Overlook Hotel, sometimes like a set design straight out of Alien or Aliens, but every time it manages to impress and intrigue and it never breaks its visual integrity; it never lets itself down.

This is a game for anyone with a penchant for slowing things right down, nosing about, exploring every corner, every nook and cranny (and you will be rewarded for both your lack of haste and your curiosity in many instances). It's easy to miss stuff if you don't take your time. Walk a while. Look about. Examine. You'll often come away with an unexpected weapon or mod. The Devs seem to have deliberately crafted a game for completionists; gotta find them all (but keep an eye on that briefcase in the corner that just moved all by itself). Go too quick and you are absolutely going to miss stuff (some of which you are going to wish you hadn't).

As a companion piece to the much-loved (by me) Alien Isolation, Prey is a fantastic godsend. At last, I have another creepy-but-gorgeous stunning Sci-Fi environment to wander about in and scare myself silly - but such wonders they are. This is what video games can sometimes do: make me wide-eyed and awestruck all over again.

Review-in-progress score: 8.5/10. Don't let this one slip under your radar.

Blimey, Cal, that is quite a write-up! I really like the sound of it but I'm way too wimpy to play horror-based games. I always like the art and styling but the tension just gets to me :fp: .

I agree with almost everything Cal has to say there about Prey, but I actually think the combat isn't half bad, but ammo is very scarce.

I just got to the Crew Quarters

What the strawberry float? Completely swarming with enemies that seem impossible to sneak past, so you've got no choice but to try and suddenly rambo your way through? The giant Nightmare enemy just stands there staring at the point where you need to enter the room so is impossible to just bypass unless you use a Lure, but if you do that you'll end up getting caught by other enemies which pretty much summons the Nightmare immediately

TBH, it's not nearly as frightening to play as games like Alien Isolation or Resident Evil 7. It's more of a horror action game - there are some tense moments to be sure, but mostly it's a game of cat-and-mouse and you are pretty well-armed throughout, although it is true sometimes ammo can be hard to come by. It's all down to some careful management of resources (don't pass up the opportunity to convert all those gubbins you collect into ammo and medkits, etc when you happen across a recycler for instance). And upgrades and mods - spend some time carefully thinking about which way you want to go with them (there severe implications down the line) and it can make a big difference.

I think you'll be fine with this - I'm a total pussy when it comes to scary games, but Prey is bearable - much more so than AI or RE7 - as far as the frights go.

And - goddammit - it is just so pretty. Like Alien Isolation, it just makes the journey that much more compelling and worthwhile.

So far I agree with Cal's write up. This is probably the best type of "immersion sim" game I've played since Dishonered or even Bioshock. Loving it!
Should be noted that I'm playing on the PC which circumvents a lot of the issues the console version has.
Is it just me or are there some strong Half Life vibes coming from this game?

Resident Evil 7 isn't scary at all.

Maybe like Dead Space? I did play the first hour or so but even that creeped me out... I keep saying I'll return to it but I have yet to build up the necessary resolve  .

Well it does have a basic enemy type of a fast moving alien that jumps at your face!

Get strawberry floated*. Took me 3 weeks to get to the first Jack fight as I was shitting it so much. It does get less scary as it goes on, but the first few hours are terrifying.

*Lol

I saw this last night on YT. One of the best reviews of Prey I've seen. A little lengthy at 30mins or so, but gives some nice development and gameplay context and explains what's so fascinating about the game and its possibilities. Well worth a look.

It's an absurdly magnificent edifice, perhaps the grandest and most beautiful facility of its kind ever imagined for a game, though coming from the art team behind Dishonored 2, this is hardly unexpected. Every chamber, blind corner or overlook is a mesmerising study in light, colour, texture and period detailing,
