Downloaded this after reading a lot of hype about recent PES games (both here and elsewhere online), got to say I'm quite disappointed. The reaction time between pressing a button on the controller to the action being carried out on the pitch seemed way off. It may have been because it was online, but it just made the whole experience very frustrating. Played 4 games and it seemed to happen in all of them.

Have other people found this? Were the last PES games similar?

I'm surprised by that, BTB. I haven't played this beta but I have played a lot of online PES over the past few years and I have found the gameplay to be pretty slick. Do you normally play FIFA? I'm not saying this to instigate another FIFA / PES battle, only to suggest that, if you're used to that game, than the different styling of PES may not suit your tastes. I'm so ingrained with PES that I'd no doubt feel the same way if I tried a FIFA demo. Diff'rent strokes and all that!

I do indeed usually play fifa (didn't mention it in fear of being called a fanboy and starting a war), but I play FIFA with the PES control set up, from my youth of playing PES

I'm sure that is probably the main reason. But I dunno, it just felt a bit sluggish and frustrating to me. I'll probably give it a few more games this weekend and see if it starts to click.

I concur, BTB. I do realise there will be a period of adjustment (and I may come to love it yet), but on first impression I have to say I too was underwhelmed after all the hype.

This plays very differently to last years edition (which I highly recommend you try BTB!) While some changes I generally agree with, in the whole it just feels less responsive and I felt less in control.

Here's a list of main things I spotted:

* crosses are much harder to get on someone's head, regularly flying past everyone. Which is pretty fair as crossing was op in 2017.

* defending; holding down x to close down doesn't work as well and there's a big delay when slide tackling from the button press. Also, I found that the change player didn't seem to work as well as prev. Continuously picking players not close enough to get a tackle in.

* more of a concentration on passing and dribbling. Dribbling seemed a lot easier, players weaving in and out of tackles. Maybe too op.

* no arrows on free kicks, so didn't have much of a clue where the ball was going to head. This will prob just take practice.

* players have more momentum so take longer to react to button presses. In general, less feeling of control, due to delay from pressing buttons and action being carried out. Case in point, I crossed in for mbappe to score into an open net and pressed the shoot button on time, yet it didn't register.

* more stray passes, not same accuracy as 2017. Can't ping about pitch just as easy (see delay above)

* like 2017 I still had connection issues. Only pes *sigh*. I suppose some of the issues I experienced above could have been because of this. However, I get the feeling not, as 2017 was always more responsive despite this.

My opinion will prob change if I get to play it more, but on first impression I'd be happy just sticking with 2017.

Ah... that doesn't sound great! I still haven't tried the demo (I just stuck with the current 2017 game last night) but the feedback from you guys reminds me of the initial launch of the - I forget exactly which one - 2014 or 2015 version. It was a bit slow and unresponsive at first, alongside online connection troubles, and it wasn't until the patch arrived that things were resolved.

Konami really has to get things right with first impressions of the game - there is no room for a showing that delivers a poor image as this demo has done with you guys. I hope they haven't made change for changes sake! I'm a bit concerned as I've already digitally pre-ordered the game... but, on the positive side, Konami has always patched and improved the games in the past. I just wish they got things right for launch.

I think it was 14 that was fixed with a patch, jawa. I had that one, skipped '15, then bought 16 and 17.

I've yet to try the demo as well (auto-download failed as my HDD was full. :fp: )

Will try it over the weekend and give my thoughts when I get the chance though.

Yeah, you're right, dude. It was a shame that the game was a bit ropey at first; the patch really turned things around but the disappointment of the launch version must have put a lot of folk off.

Based on the thoughts I've read, I'm probably not gonna play the demo this time - it sounds like there is work to be done. I'll hold off and continue playing the current version until the new game launches.

My thoughts

+ Dribbling is MASSIVELY improved, so much smoother and realistic, able to pull off all kinds of sexy moves with subtle movements of the left stick, no need for right stick or shoulder buttons, love the little slalom turns I can do, especially with Griezmann

+ Ball control, ball is much more free, able to trap or knock ahead in seemingly infinite ways

+ Ground passing is much more realistic, no longer able to do pinball passes around the pitch, thought has to be put into every pass.

+ Air passing is much lower, I'm liking playing short O button passes out of the keeper's hands

+/- I'm not sure whether they've been perfect to the point of being too good or whether I just need to put more effort into accurate shooting than before

- Tackling, again not sure if I'm doing this wrong, struggling with standing tackles, slide tackles seem less assisted, getting a lot of red cards

- Brazil, are they really this bad now? Mid-fielders feel more Sunday league

- Motion blur on replays, liked this in PES 2017, looks very bitty and rough this year

I think I'll be sticking with my dusty old copy of PES16, served me perfectly fine so far.

Yeah, still a great game: just the servers are empty. That's what worries me about not getting the latest version: I've really been enjoying playing online, especially with some of the guys on here.

If I don't fancy this latest one, I might just have a year of Master League.

I don't play online, so that aspect isn't a concern for me at all.

I've only played two games on the beta but I didn't think it was as bad as some of the impressions here. It definitely seems a lot 'heavier' than 2017 and so feels slightly slower, but I cant say it felt sluggish or unresponsive to me. I think the delay some people have talked about is just where they are used to FIFA where the ball tends to ping as soon as you hit the button. On PES it's not always instantaneous depending on the position and movement of your player. It's something you learn to judge naturally and so those of us who have played last year's edition probably don't notice.

Crosses have definitely been nerfed which is a good thing (although I did score with my first corner  ) and I like the removal of the line at set-pieces. It seems more like classic PES.

Crosses being nerfed sounds amazing, TBH. They are so frequently my undoing (#BaleRonaldoSpam), yet I rarely score from them myself.

Lad at work says he really likes the beta. I can't wait to try it.

Just like real football, you can't actually kick the ball before your feet are in position and you've moved your leg, even longer if you're sprinting or turning. They've actually upped the range in this, I see more back heels and players stretching to hit the ball from awkward positions while remaining integral to how real footballers move.

That's what I hate abut FIFA, it completely ignores things like momentum and physics, you may as well be controlling a bunch of air hockey paddles.

I tend to utilise a lot of crosses but I try not to spam them, and it probably isn't as bad when you aren't playing as a team with 3 of the best players up front.

Ronaldo's heading in 2017 is ridiculous so I hope that's been nerfed as well. Real Madrid aren't in the beta so we will have to wait and see.
