The idea that Pro Evo is out of this world amazing and FIFA is the worst game ever made is ridiculous. They are very, very similar.

I agree, difference is fifa has the licenses and presentation and online play is better too.

Eurogamer review:
The football is as sublime as ever, but PES's lack of progress elsewhere pulls it back.

But then the list of things I love about PES 2019 comes to an end, and I realise that so much of this underdog football video game just isn't good enough.

I hate the menus. Yes, I know, menus, but really, they're an embarrassment, and you spend quite a lot of time in football video game menus so there's quite a lot to be embarrassed about. PES' menus have barely changed since the series' glory days on PlayStation 2 - and they were bad then, too. Basic, boring and counterintuitive, PES 2019's menus and, well, the entire user interface reeks of a bargain basement budget.

The text font is an abomination. I know, what a thing to hate in a video game, but truly, in PES 2019, the font is that bad. Upon starting my Master League, I discovered there were not enough character spaces for me to enter my full-name. Instead I had to cut it short, lobbing the e off the end. Thankfully there was enough space for the l.

The text work is amateurish. Here's a quote from A. REDMOND, one of my Master League subs who came on to score in one league match for my beloved South Norwood: "I knew A. HERVEY was going to get the ball to me." I think I'll start referring to my friends like this when I talk out loud. "I knew T. PHILLIPS was going to catch that Pokemon." And so on.

PES 2019 borders on the hilarious. At one point during my Master League I got a budget report after a cup win. It said, and I quote: "We received a win bonus of England Cup." Later, my assistant coach told me fans were expecting B. GOIOS to score in every game, and so had given him a nickname: "The fans are calling him 'The Terrible' now." Bet old B. GOIOS loved that.

Graphically, PES 2019 is frustratingly inconsistent. Yes, officially-licensed matches look the business, but outside of these, the stadiums, pitches and players look flat, as if you're playing Subbuteo. The charm of playing as an unlicensed team deserted PES years ago. Now, PES just looks Sunday league. Yes, I know you can download user-created files that edit the game to look officially-licensed, but most players won't bother with this - or even know this is an option - while it's blocked for Xbox One players. The upshot is playing London FC versus South Norwood or Man Red versus East Midlands feels like you're watching one of those football betting adverts where a couple of players wearing nondescript kits jump up to head a ball. I half expect Ray Winstone to trot onto the pitch at halftime to give me live odds for the match I'm playing.

PES 2019 sounds terrible. The commentary is laughable and an immediate turn-off. The crowd sounds are so bad, if you were to close your eyes you'd think you were at an England friendly. The menu music washed over me. The sounds of menu interactions are from a bygone era. The only thing about PES 2019 that sounds halfway decent is the music that blasts out of the PA system during the Camp Nou walkout cutscene - and that's prerecorded.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on the franchise. The actual football gameplay is great, but everything else is just so amateurish. You'd think they'd take a look at FIFA and how slick their presentation is and try and copy at least some of it, but no. It's all flat backgrounds and counter-intuitive menu systems. Very frustrating for a game in 2018 to be stuck back in 2008.

That's not to say that you guys won't enjoy it, but it's a pass (ha!) for me.

TBH we have a good month to play and decide whether it is good enough and if it isn't, theres always Fifa. I felt the gameplay was a little slow in the demo and hope it is improved in the full release. I am most looking forward to seeing how spurs are in the full game and need that kit patch!

There'll be some later today from PES World.

I played my first game before work today, ended 0-0. It seems so much harder to score this time round. I really struggled to get the ball into a dangerous part of the box. You need to be a lot more precise with your passing. Quick subs are a nice QoL feature, and the menus are as daft as ever.

Keep an eye on https://twitter.com/officialpesw for updates on the option files.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Couldn't find a thread for this but, FIFA 19 is actually looking good this year.

I've only watched a few videos, but the way they've improved contextual animations this year is really impressive.

It'd be great if a fan of the FIFA series could setup a FIFA 19 thread for talking about that game. At the very least, chat about the latest demo for that game should go in the FIFA 18 thread rather than here. I'm only saying this because I want to avoid this thread becoming a home for the FIFA v PES arguments that take place each year.

Well, I haven't commented on the game yet but, having now played 48 matches (W15, D14, L19), I feel qualified to. You can't really give an assessment on a game like this without playing it for quite a while!

As ever, I have only played the Online Divisions mode; that's my bag.

+ Gameplay feels slighty slower-paced than PES 2018; it remains more simulation than arcade
+ The ball seems a little looser and this adds to the realism - you can't stick the ball to your foot and ricochets are more frequent and more realistic
+ Physicality is far more obvious now; players use muscle to try and get the ball and you almost feel the crunch of some challenges!
- In most aspects it's an incremental update over 2018 rather than a revolutionary one... but this is not really a bad thing in my eyes

I should also mention that many folk have indicated the AI regularly plays low crosses into the box in single player mode; I haven't tried this mode but hopefully Konami will improve this aspect through their updates.

I have downloaded kits and badges from PES World and they're superb. The soundtrack is decent, too; I'm not hip enough to recognise them but they feel "modern" .

I'm enjoying it and I've just achieved promotion to Online Diviion 7. I'm quite pleased as I challenged myself to use a different, slightly weaker team in each game.... there were some real battles!
Derby 0-0 Chelsea
Inter Milan 1-3 FC Copenhagen
AEK Athens 0-2 Newcastle United
Liverpool 1-1 Guingamp
Man United 1-1 Toulouse
River Plate 1-1 Liverpoool
PSG 0-0 Locomotive Moscow
Saint Etienne 0-1 AC Milan
Inter Milan 0-1 Algeria

P9, W2, D5, L2... PROMOTION TO ONLINE DIVISION 7 :toot: .

Overall, yeah - I think it's great. If you don't play online then you may wish to save some money and play last year's game; but, if you love the online challenge, I reckon it's worth the upgrade.

CONFIRMED: PES is still packed with emotions!

Coming off the back of a travesty of a result - playing as Shakhtar, I lost 2-0 to PSG even though I dominated the game and had double the passes and double the shots on target as they did - I was fired up to gain a victory.

I selected AZ Alkmaar and was playing away to Benfica. My opponent was good and I started poorly; I knew that this was gonna be a battle! I hung in there and thought that I'd have to take any chances I got... I missed a great opportunity but could I hold Benfica out and make another?

I was outta my seat when I edged that; I had hung in there and snatched the victory :-).

Edit: Yeah, I've been titling my PES 2019 uploads PES 2018 in YouTube :fp:  .

I've been playing this quite a lot over the past week. I challenged myself to use slightly weaker teams and try and get promotion from Online Division 7. Things were going great; in the first eight matches I won 2, drew 5 and lost 1... I just needed a couple of points from either of the final two matches and I'd be going up!

i got smashed 0-6 and 0-5  . It was really odd; I had barely been conceding and all of a sudden my players were moving like lead and Lukaku / Ronaldo respectively were scoring against me with every shot. In both games I made the most passes but I couldn't stop the goal tide.

Mildly frustrated, I started the new season and things are back to "normal". I just re-gained some confidence by defeating Real Madrid 3-0 using FC Midtjylland.

I've discovored an odd bug which is rare but super-annoying; all of a sudden your players nearest the ball will kinda move away from it for a second or two and you can't kick it! It happened to me earlier in the week and today it hapened to one of my online opponents. That's only twice in around fifty-five matches, but I hope they can patch it out!

Just dragging this topic up from page 3 because I've finally reached a point where I need some help. Jawa in particular might offer some insight.
The problem: I've been playing using advanced shooting, but every (EVERY) shot inside the box wants to head towards the roof of the net despite how little I brush, nay, feather-touch, the power bar. Power should equate to height in the area (or anywhere for that matter) but I can't remember a time I've rolled a finish into the bottom corner when 1-on-1 with the keeper.
It's really pissing me off.

Sorry, Diceman, but I haven't used the Advanced shooting option at all! I believe an arrow / zone appears that you can move to indicate your targeted shot? I might give it a try out.

An arrow or zone does not appear at all. It's just awful.
It's the setting below 'manual', which apparently offers more control over shot direction. I am no way a good enough player to select 'manual' and trust the analogue sticks to steer my shot exactly where I want them to go, but I thought 'advanced' would be a happy medium.
My experience has been that every shot goes high, and it's very difficult to hit the sides of the goal unless you use precision with R2. I've not scored one goal in this game where I've been running though at goal and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. Not one.
Do you use 'basic'? I'd love to hear your feedback after playing a few games using 'advanced' shooting if you do. If only to find out I'm doing something spectaculary wrong.
