Okay, so it's not going to win any awards, but I finally finished making a game! It's called Procii (from "procedural ascii") and I'd describe it as an exploration game with an arcade level structure.

I'd love it if anyone had a go and told me what they think. It should support mouse/touch controls as well as keyboard, although you'll probably need to zoom in on the page if you're on mobile.

Up until level 11 you should keep running into new things to interact with. It's a little cryptic, but there is a way of completing the game and seeing a credits screen too. Any questions just ask, but hopefully some fun comes from the discovery!

I hope you like it :toot:

Wait a minute, it's pronounced "pro-sea"? I've been calling it "prosk-ee". Why didn't someone tell me? Oh, I've been making an idiot out of myself.

I can't play that for any longer than a few minutes, my eyes can't cope with the ascii art.

Interesting, but I can't seem to work out what I'm supposed to be doing! I just seem to move around and occasionally things change colour when I press the space bar!

When you interact with a monolith you advance to the next level, which means a new (slightly larger) island with different colour scheme.

Also from level 6 the campfire will spawn on each island that alternates the background colour between white and black when interacted with (there is also an unlit campfire from level 7 that first you must light by interacting with it before it can be used).

Full list of environments to interact with by level they are introduced:

Level 1 - Monolith, House

Interacting with the monolith takes you to the next island/level.
Interacting with the house opens the door, the total number of houses you have discovered is important to completing the game

Level 2 - Signpost

Interacting with the signpost will point you in the direction of the house

Level 3 - Fountain (x2)

Interacting with one fountain will teleport you to the other

Level 4 - Signpost

A second signpost is added

Level 5 - Milestone

Like a signpost, but points you towards the monolith instead

Level 6 - Campfire

Interacting with the campfire will switch between night and day

Level 7 - Unlit Campfire

Interact with the unlit campfire to light it and turn it into a campfire

Level 8 - Milestone

A second milestone is added

Level 9 - Warp

Interacting with the warp will teleport you straight to the monolith

Level 10 - Gravestone

Interact with the gravestone once a certain condition has been met to break it (and prevent it spawning again in future levels)

Level 11 - Stone Carving

The stone carving shows the player to interact with the gravestone once they have found/opened 10 houses. Interacting with the stone carving once the grave has been broken will show the credits/complete the game.

Cool thanks for the info!

I had noticed a houseat one point and wondered if there was anything else I could do with it.

I must be a bit of a dolt as I can't get a grip on how to play this :fp: .

I'm pressing the cursor keys to change the picture (level?) but nothing seems to happen when I press the action button (space bar).

Cursor keys are movement, so up/down to move forward/back and left/right to turn 90 degrees left or right. If they aren't working use WASD.

Space (or z) to interact only does anything when you're at a special location, like a house or monolith.

I won't be offended if you find the visuals a little confusing :P The three colours of the visuals differentiate your current location from locations in the distance 1 and 2 steps away. You are looking out in a vision cone, basically.

Pressing the cursor keys is just to move around - you have to find a specific "thing" in the levels to interact with...

Once I worked out that it was an ASCII representation of a first person game it suddenly all made sense - at first I though I was just scrolling through a bunch of side on screens like in an old point and click adventure game!

Ahh, I guess that might not be obvious at all! The power of playtesting, haha

Ah! Now I see; I, too, kinda thought we were looking side-on rather than first-person :-).

So, I've found a house and pressed space to open the door. Like this:

I'm not sure what I have to do now; I can't get into the house... do I need to look for something else?

Yeah you should move on now you've done that. Finding/opening enough houses is tied to "completing" the game, but it's left intentionally unexplained. It's all spoilered above if you want to know.

I'm glad the basic mechanics make sense now though!

Thanks, Orange. I'll continue to have a little go on it...
