This is a new racing game being developed by Slightly Mad Studios (Shift, Shift 2: Unleashed). The game is being built as a community funded project. You can buy a membership for as little as €10, which entitles you to free monthly builds of the open Beta and a free copy of the final game. For more of an initial investment you become a 'Team Member' and directly contribute to the game via 'meetings' with the developers, grab weekly builds of the game, etc.

I have signed up on the lowest membership tier ('Junior') and have downloaded my first build of the game (1.5GB). Believe the video above: that's how the DX11 version really looks on a good PC (a DX9 version is also available). I've been playing the game with my 360 controller on the PC - some tracks are still works in progress (many trackside buildings, for instance, are not yet fully textured) and I can safely say that for any racing fans this is a very promising, good-looking game that appears to run perfectly well, even at this early stage.

Bear in mind it's a Beta, very much still in development.

I imagine arms are going to be added at a later date. That looks pretty damn good, glad to see lots of older racing classes brought back. This could be amazing, will definitely keep an eye on this.

The hands will be added later.

I think the plan is to have three options: Wheel/hands > Wheel only > No wheel

2012 is sim racing heaven

This will probably be the best of the bunch though:

Yep, I have long been a fan of SMS's work on the Shift games (Shift 2 has to be one of my all-time favourite racing games), so for me to put money down for this one from them was a no-brainer. I want to support SMS because I believe they understand what makes a good, exciting racing game.

The latest pre-Alpha really does play very well - the AI is spectacular; nowhere near as ridiculously bossy and aggressive as seen on previous games, but also very prone to making some truly awesome mistakes with potentially fatal consequences for you, amongst the pack. The car modelling is beautiful - and it's not even finalised yet - these are the very best car models I have ever seen in a video game.

Actual in-game footage (not taken by me):

In this video you can clearly see several as yet untextured buildings trackside, which is where we are at the moment with several of the pre-Alpha tracks. The tracks are otherwise fully functional and almost all support AI racing as well as solo time trials and freeplay:

I will endeavour to FRAPS some of my own footage as I get more comfortable with the game.

I think Falsey and Rog are both interested in it and have stumped up.

OMG...look at this gooseberry fool!

And the best part...it's coming to PS4! Even better, the footage is from PC and PS4!

So pre-ordered :datass:

One of the recent patches added a 'presets' screen to settings which lets you choose your base skill level and auto configures everything to match. So it lets you chose from like shift 2, forza, gtr etc and then configures it to fit that.

I set it to Forza and turned the driving assists off and its so much better with the controller now. A joy to play.

Right wheel in the dirt as I lifted off the brakes and turned the wheel, ended up eating wall as it snapped away from me.

Looks really good!

Can't believe these are the same lot that made Shift 2, possibly the worst driving game I've ever purchased. :dread:

Shift 2 wasnt that bad. It was strange though. I feel like it was probably hampered by EA meddling.

It had a lot of gooseberry fool that other sims just didnt, but it was ruined by a bizarre handling model that you could never really fix. I was really concerned that cars was turning out the same way and I was not enjoying it at all, but this presets thing seems to have really sorted it out nicely.

Shift 2 was pretty good played in the right camera view with the right cars.

I mean it wasn't a sim racer and it had its problems but there are racing games out there that are really bad, Shift 2 wasn't one of them.

There is if you want it.

I prefer all assists off, but you can have pretty much anything you want including driving line indicator, auto braking, turn assist, spin assist etc etc.

If you go to options, below graphics and gameplay etc there is a white square that says presets, open that and pick whichever one you want. Apparantly its not 100% functional yet, but made a massive improvement for me.

You think so? I think its decent, allows you to navigate very quickly.

They recently added Oulton Park too which is my local track, but Im pretty gooseberry fool at it so far. Need to get some practice in.

I actually enjoyed Shift 2 (on PS3), TBF. The car mods had a very realistic impact on the handling.

This looks absolutely amazing.

I'm absolutely desperate for a decent driving game on the PS4.
