First impressions are good (PS4 Pro version).

Visually, the title doesn't appear to be a huge leap over the previous game (considering that game has the benefit of two years worth of patches and updates), however it looks impressive, albeit plagued with shadow artifacting and quite a bit of jaggies. I'm hopeful SMS can sort this all out going forward - they pretty much solved the previous games' issues over time. I didn't see any obvious frame drops or jittering on the Pro and even the replays performed without hitching.

I like the new menus and the sheer amount of game customization is - again - a welcome thing. SMS seem to understand that racing fans love to tinker with just about every aspect of their sims. Good job!

Tracks and cars in the default game (I bought the lowest-tier basic game) are massive in terms of quantity and choice. Looking forward to seeing how they fill these out even more over time with DLC packs.

I can't spot any special PS4 Pro options anywhere, so I'm assuming it's all just coded into the game and if it sees its running on a Pro it adapts its performance accordingly. Perhaps a patch or two might be forthcoming in that department.

All in all, after a few experimental races, I'm happy enough. I know SMS invest in patches and upgrades, so it'll be interesting to see how this game changes over the next year or two, but this is a good base to work from.

Some disagreement about standard controllers out of the box aside it's very nice on the Pro. A few frame drops when things get busy, but on the whole a solid performance.

I noticed the shadow artifacts too, max settings on PC. Must be a bug then I guess.

Nah, going to wait a while and get it when there's a price drop as I've got more than enough sims to keep me going at the moment.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing in every YT pre-review and review so far on every platform. I'm confident SMS will get on the case and do what they can to mitigate the effect. They were excellent at maintaining the previous game (especially on PS4) to the point that the original, in terms of performance, still has an edge over its successor (for now).

Another good example (on PS4) is Assetto Corsa. That sim released in a right state on PS4 originally, but the devs have been brilliant at producing regular fixes and patches (as well as some tasty DLC). It purrs along with a faultless framerate and looks genuinely impressive on my Pro.

On the naughty step we have Milestone and the broken mess that was WRC6 (on PS4). They never did fix the v-sync and to this day the game stutters and chugs its way about, even on my Pro. They just didn't bother updating the game after the first couple of miserly patches. I'll never touch another Milestone sim and I refuse to have anything to do with WRC7.

I don't think Milestone update any of their rally games. Can't remember which in the series it was, (maybe WRC4?), but they'd forgot to add a button to take actual photos in photo mode making it a completely redundant feature.

It was never updated.

Milestone have a reputation for never patching anything; i bought Ride but apparently it had a save-corrupting bug which i have no idea if it was ever fixed, which is a shame as a bike-oriented forza was an appealing idea. That and i don't think they ever delivered all the content in the season pass.

With all this talk in multiple threads would a general racing game thread be an idea? Each game thread on its own doesn't tend to get much traffic.

Just played a dusk lap on Nordschleife with the 488, really convinced me about this game. The best sim of this gen, and last.

Rough edges to iron off, but Im pleased.

I forget, are you using a pad or have you thrown money at a direct drive wheel and full cockpit #simracingswag?

Like his Mrs would let him have that.

False put some videos up, would be good to see it played by someone good at Sims and who doesn't use a strawberry floating external camera :dread:

I used to have the fancy wheel setup but Im on a pad at the moment because I grew up and my soul died.

Ill record a vid tonight, that lap I did was a 7:29 with a pit start, first time in the car. Felt good and fast in sectors but I butchered the carousel and wuss on the brakes around third sector.

I always liked the look of Ride as well. Shame.

Yes, a dedicated racing thread would be good.

Tyre model is far better the PC1 i find handling on a controller is a major leap forward car list with the new additions are awesome.

As requested. Disclaimer, this isnt a world record lap, just getting used to the car, only my second lap around. Took 9 seconds off my first, at least.

Two grassy moments and still a bit wussy on the brakes, lines can use some work, you get the picture though.

I have no idea what the deal is with the split times though, I dont know what they are splitting against. On this track it puts me 3 mins+ behind... something? Shorter tracks it drops me like 30 secs+ behind but Im like 3-4 secs off record pace??

Cheers falsey. Hmm it doesn't really look that good graphics wise, but then I've never really found project cars to look as good as screenshots would have you believe. Still, the handling is the most important thing.

Topic title could do with fixing to take out the misleading PSVR part. There's no console VR in this game (at the moment).

Just started the career mode, not managed to complete a race, the open wheeled car I was driving was ridiculously twitchy...but really fun to drive. Just about getting the hang of it I think.

Didn't realise there was a demo for this so I downloaded it last night and gave the 3 races a go in VR.

Really like the handling, as falsey days it seems a lot more progressive now when the grip goes. The third race, a wet dry wet race in a gt Ferrari was fantastic. Spray all over the place, a drying line forming, sheets of rain going sideways across the track, but best of all is the puddles that form in the gutters by the kerb on a few corners. A few times I dipped a wheel on the way through and the car snapped which was great.

Well definitely buy this when a goty version is on sale.

Did you keep on with that racing tournament you were doing?
