My party from chapter 2 until the end, not counting forced powerlevelling losers up to speed, was Ophilia MC, Cyrus, Therion and filler. I wasn't not going to have a healer and Ophilia's party-wide and light elementals were nice; the second I realised there were chests only Therion could open he was never coming out because strawberry float rerunning dungeons for loot; and Cyrus is just best boy and a walking WMD with multiple party-wide multi-hit spells for damage and breaks.

Last spot was usually filled with Tressa until I realised I had infinite money and didn't really need her, Prim to just do nothing but cast Peacock Strut/Inspiriting Plum on Cyrus, or Olberic if I needed to punch something really hard with a sword/axe/spear/bow.

H'aanit and Alfyn got sat down on the bench and dragged up to speed when needed because oh boy are their mechanics annoying. I dislike alchemist characters with limited stock, because I just fall into the elixir trap where I could use this consumable item on this enemy...or I could just have Cyrus nuke them from orbit and only need to balance the cost of MP. Ailments don't even carry over between fights and other than bosses they don't last long enough to be an issue. H'aanit was also a hassle to build up her pokemon. I appreciate her versatility, but I never felt lacking for utility in the shadow of B I G N U M B E R S

As a Therion main I can recommend him. SP Steal + SP Share = good support. Also he gets some of the better travel banter, being the resident snarky bastard.

Out of the 5 opening chapters I did I only really enjoyed Therion's and Primrose's, so starting afresh it'd be between the two. SP steal and share sounds a treat as well.

About 11 hours in and just finished all of the opening chapters. Cyrus' story seems the most interesting, some of the others are ok. I'm just hoping the cut scenes get a bit shorter now as I was really starting to get bored of them. Also a bit disappointed with the side quests, most of the ones I've done have been 'do this and get your reward'. Was kind of hoping they'd be multi-part things. Combat is interesting and balancing the party is also good. Will probably plough on with it though I'm casting flirtatious eyes at Into The Breach.

Can’t say the cut-scenes get shorter, but the stories get more interesting (apart from Ophelia’s) from hereon out, and there are some multi-part quests. The real test will be whether you can push through the grind that now awaits you: I certainly had to go find some optional dungeons before taking on the Chapter 2s. (2-3 isn’t as bad.)

Incidentally if anybody wants to level up and can’t be bothered to explore for optional dungeons, the ‘Dungeons’ tab on the link below is basically spoiler-free (it does tell you later-game name areas and job system stuff). I’ve found it useful.

Interesting. There did seem a big disparity between my current level after doing the Chapt 1s (my highest is around 16, some are at 9) and the suggested level of 22.

Just finished Alfyn's opening chapter (again), I'll be hoping to push on and get Primrose's and maybe Olberic's done this afternoon/evening.

Also I know I'm not at all far into this but any way to get easy money? I can see outfitting a party of 4 (switching armour/accessories between the active and inactive party members) with the best items won't be cheap....

If you have Tressa in your party, her unique skill (like how Alfyn can mix potions and Therion can open chests) lets her just find money lying around as you transition screens. You'll get a message like "Tressa spotted <money> left behind by a poor soul." Also, if you level people up and buy them new skills they get new passives you can equip. Tressa gets one which is just bonus money at the end of fights.

if you have her in your party for long enough you will end up with more than you know what to do with.

Also if you can have Therion steal stuff from people it can be a decent way to gear up, or get vendor trash.

I must admit that I’ve usually settled for buying one set of armour/weapons per character’s chapter. That’s even with Therion being my main. I’ve found myself dealing okay with the damage.

I'll certainly use Tressa for that use when I get her, I'm utilising Therion at the moment to steal some good gear which does seem to work quite well (in that I've not been caught yet!).

I’m on the boss of the final Chapter 3, and I am impressed. After the Chapter 1s had more misses than hits, and the Chapter 2s more hits than misses but still some mediocre ones (Ophelia this means you), the Chapter 3s have, I think, been universally grand. The payoff is finally starting to hit home.

What’s your favourite Chapter 3? Alfyn’s remains hard to beat for me, although Therion and (I am amazed) Ophelia are up there. H’aanit takes the best boss.

Olberic's chapter 3 has my single favourite moment in the whole game.

Still ploughing on but it feels like a bit of a chore. Not sure what it is about it, it's mostly the connecting areas that annoy me I think. The random battles are a pain but mostly because it makes grinding up characters annoying, you just have to run in circles until a battle starts. Also, is running supposed to make battles happen more often? I kind of assumed that by the minimap turning red but the frequency of the battles doesn't seem to increase.

I'm not sure how best to explain it but it's almost like seeing the seams of how the game has been built, you go between towns to level a bit and open a few chests then do a chapter dungeon to level up a bit and get some items before getting to the boss. Then rinse and repeat another 7 times.

While I can’t deny any of the above, I’ve just finished my first Chapter 4 and (aside from the boss being entertainingly bats**t) the story that draws those simple mechanics together has become really quite good.

All-party unconsciousness attacks can get stuffed though. :x

I'm finding the same issue on my second attempt playing this as I did on my first, once you start getting more than 4 characters. I don't mind the need for switching out people but the grinding is really getting on my nerves. Find a new character? Grind them up! Another new character? More grinding please :dread: It probably would have taken a lot out of the game for some people but I'd have loved an party wide auto levelling system and for new characters to be around the recommended level already when you meet them rather than introducing them and then getting them up to the recommended level.

Kind of wish they'd gone for 4 characters with instead of the 8, anyone else feel the same?

That’s basically the Bravely games! Which I do recommend if your 3DS is still in play. While I long for Bravely Third, I don’t mind them having tried something different, even if it didn’t entirely work.

I have one Chapter 4 to go, but I’m willing to rank Ophelia’s adventure as most improved, Tressa’s adventure as weakest, and Cyrus and Primrose fighting it out for best adventure overall.

I'm torn on that, I can see the interest in having as many different stories as possible but the character abilities seem very interchangeable (which makes sense, you wouldn't want to be swapping out characters in your party all the time a la XC2 field skills).

I've given up on it for now and am playing Yoku instead. I've a feeling I may never go back to it with Diablo around the corner and XC2 DLC to do as well.

I loved both of the Bravely games, in a sense I'd have just preferred Bravely Third rather than Octopath. I guess the idea of probably hours worth of grinding is slightly putting me off, of course I could complete 4 of the characters stories first and then do the second 4 but that would still require just as much levelling overall.

There isn’t hours of grinding; there’s definitely more than there should be. That said, I didn’t find I had to do any until the end of all the Chapter 1s...

Maybe I'm just worrying/levelling up unnecessarily then! Looking at the end of chapter 1's to the end for each character seems like a really big jump though....

Yes, then it really does take a leap. That’s the worst grinding in the game, in my opinion. There are a couple of Level 15 and (if you’re bold) 20 optional dungeons that can be explored for loot which can help, but otherwise your best bet is to try and fight your way to the new towns and level up on the way.
