I started the demo and quickly realised it isn't for me. The drawn out text dialogue and the pseudo 8-bit graphics really turned me off.

I absolutely adore this demo but it's left me with a few questions at the last minute. Do we not get to catch up on each characters story as we collect them? Or do you only get your opening characters story. I understand only getting the fleshed out story if your first choice, but is this just going to be a Final Fantasy with seven Yuffies/Vincents?

Great demo though, love the voice acting and battle system.

You can pre-order the Traveller's Compendium Special Edition at Argos for £31.99 at the moment. I've taken a chance and placed an order but I'll buy the digital version if it gets cancelled.

Cheers for the heads up.

At that price you just have to place an order.

Just had a paypal refund on my order at Argos so it looks like that's getting cancelled.

EDIT: Yep, cancelled. Though they did send me a £5 voucher to use on another order by way of an apology. Might order the standard edition from them if the price is decent.

Nintendo Life has had a play of the game and they appear to be pretty positive about it. However, they did highlight that the game is tough to get to grips with.

Nintendo Life, talking about the battle system, wrote:Much like everything else we’ve said, failure to pay attention to this is all but a death sentence. If you don’t know what you’re doing or you don’t pay enough attention, this game will punch you very hard on the nose...

...It is a bit of a concern that there seems to be very little leniency in these areas. The game doesn’t hide any of these mechanics or techniques from you, but if you don’t apply them properly or you just don’t have the right tactical way of thinking, you’re going to be in for a world of hurt. It’s unclear if there are any allowances for less skilled players to also enjoy the game, but from what we’ve played this is undeniably a game for the hardcore players.

Hmmn. Some of you guys will undoubtably appreciate the challenge but it sounds like this could be a bit unwelcoming for more casual players.

Was impressed by the art style of the demo but the ponderous dialogue and aaaaaaawful voice acting put me off somewhat. Which is a shame. I'm jonesing for a Golden Sun-esque old school RPG.

The same could be used to describe the battle system for the Bravely series. Some of the bosses really made you look at class skills and mechanics, and chaining them to compliment other classes skills, or exploit those of a boss. But where Bravely excelled was the multitude of solutions the player could make, and how rewarding it felt overcoming the obstacles.

I can't wait for this, but at the same time, I hope when it's out the door we hear news of Bravely 3rd, and that it's Switch bound.

Normally I'd jump right into this when it hits the eShop but I'm quite focused on Xenoblade so I'll end up starting with the full release sometime after launch. This is a good chance for eager gamers to start on their Octopath and for anyone still on the fence to get a closer look at the game.

Progress in the new demo supposedly carries over to the full game so I'm more inclined to play that in a week or so ahead of launch.

I'm really looking forward to this and wish that I had more time to juggle it with Xenoblade. It'd be good to hear people's thoughts about the new demo, especially in comparison to the first one.

Just downloaded the demo, it's effectively the first 3 hours of the game (according the description you can play for 3 hours but it may limit your progress into later chapters) and you can play as any of the 8 protagonists. That's pretty generous for a demo.

Not sure if I should download this or not, I loved the first demo but with this one effectively being the first 3 hours of the game I might hold off till the full game actually comes out.

What are people's thoughts on the second demo?

Yet to give it a play but yeah the description sounds cool

I love the metagame with timed demos of repeatedly playing them to see how far you can get

Ord wrote:Like I said, I played through through the demo, and I have my issues with the game. I know it's only the demo and I may be proven wrong with the final game, I hope I am, but art direction aside (music is bloody excellent though), it seemed like an average 16 bit JRPG game. Emperor in new clothes as it were.
What made it feel average to you? The art style was very striking and easily drew me in. I found the combat to be a more engaging take on turn-based combat than most other RPGs - it's a very welcome contrast to something like World of Final Fantasy whose demo bored my interest away.
Rex Kramer wrote:The little transition you get when you go into a building in Octopath is truly lovely. Almost Paper Mario-esque.
I love that effect
Karl wrote:Octopath is one of the only pseudo-16-bit games I've ever thought looked truly excellent. It's faithful to the best-looking JRPGs of that era while obviously adding the 3D twist, which lets it play with pretty perspective and lighting. Really beautiful art direction.

It's way beyond your typical "£10 on Steam" indie 16-bit graphics. I don't want to start some kind of holy war but I think it's miles ahead in terms of detail and polish of what your stereotypical little indie studio could ever pull off in that art style. (I have no doubt we'll see Octopath-alikes on Steam next year and they'll look super janky by comparison.)
Well said :toot: I was captivated by the art style when we first saw it during the 4am Nintendo Switch reveal and the demo ramped up my hype. Only the Eric Xenoblade 2 has kept me from diving into the new demo.
Ord wrote:TBH £50 is a bit much for any game, pixle art or not! After the demo I was left with mixed feelings. Nowt wrong with waiting for reviews, discounts.
It's £39.99 at Smyths and you can save a further £5 if you buy it in store.

If anything, the second demo might be worth a download to avoid me experiencing a complete dilemma as to which character to start the journey with in the full release. I believe you can go on to recruit the other members as part of the full game, but I don't think I'd be alone in feeling that the traveller I choose first will feel more like the protagonist than any of the other seven.
