What were you trying to do?

I don't think you need to use the face buttons at all. I gave up on them. Just get whatever you want him to do in the centre of the camera view, hold R1 and point (left stick), then let go.

And give him some time to do it. If you keep giving orders he just gets confused.

And if he still won't do what you want, you might have to rethink things.

Yeah, I was using the jump command and pointing, to try and get him to stand in a specific place to I could reach some stairs. I think I was accidentally doing too much too as he kept wandering off as soon as I mounted him, which in turn caused the camera to spazz out which caused my yelling. So yes, I suppose it was my fault but it was extremely frustrating. And the fact remains that there is, so far, very little sense of progression. It's just moving Trico from room to almost-identical room, with a few outdoor bits that are ruined by the framerate.

You don't need to use a jump button. Just point to where you want to go and he will jump or do whatever he needs to do to get you there, unless it's not what you're supposed to do.

The face buttons are stupid because sometimes you need him to lean and sometimes you need him to jump. Pointing will solve that as he will just do whichever is required rather than failing at whichever you decide to choose.

Things will pick up. It's a very slow starter.

Can't talk about performance issues as it runs well on pro. If it was about 15fps, I can imagine I'd be annoyed too.

What do face buttons do re commands? I've been only doing the point commands since I got 'em...

x- jump
triangle - rear head/go up against something
square - attack/hit

Not sure what circle does. All of them are totally pointless. Pointing wins.

This is probably GOTY, btw.

Circle congratulates/calms down Trico, similar to what circle does when you're riding him/her.

Jump (whilst holding R1?) I knew of, circle I knew did something but wasn't sure what :fp:, but was completely unaware of square. :? Did the game explain these and I somehow missed/forgot them? But it's not a huge issue because, as Bizzle said, utilising point made him carry out all these actions anyway.

This isn't my GotY (I haven't completed it, yet) but of what I've seen so far, and saw this morning, I can see why it's in many a 2016 GotY list. If it gets its hooks into you then you're in for a good time. Even if the gameplay isn't radically new or anything.

It doesn't explain any of them, but in the area you first learn to control Trico there are a load of crates you can practice the attack command on.

Does it even need to explain them? I thought it was fairly obvious straight away that they do :shifty: (whatever command a button does for the boy; when you hold R1 it makes Trico do that command instead).

It may not need to but it's a flawed way of doing things because it *does* tell you of how to command Trico with R1 point and jump, so why not the other buttons? Add in the heavy-handed use of control pop ups and it's a bizarre mix of hand holding and figure this gooseberry fool for yourself. Weird.

EDIT I WAS WRONG

It definitely tells you that one though.

If it wasn't for this topic I would have no idea you could this except for the pointing where to go which pretty much does everything anyway.

Huh?

I thought these:

Cross - Stomp
Square - Attack/Hit
Circle - Praise Trico/Clapping
Triangle - Jump
Left Stick - Tell Trico where to go

It works fine for me and Trico can be amazing to listen what I told him so. At the moment, I noticed we are getting higher to the mountains and Trico's horns are growing. I expect something will happen soon, but I hope it's not going to be an awful situation. Yes, I remembered Agro. :(

Completed. I will post my view later, but for now.

It is just... simply astonishing.

Got passed that part earlier this morning and basically got to the point where Trico was th boy and it shows how the boy ended up with Trico in that cave. What happened afterwards really brought a tear to my eyes :slol: bloody wonderful game it is

Finished! My my what a lovely game, something I didn't think it would turn out to be from starting it but it just got better and better. Game of 2016 for me even if I finished it in 2017 :toot: sorry Titanfall 2, you got nudged off that top spot.

It's nice to hear about folk enjoying the game; after nine-or-so years I suspect that most people thought it'd be a huge disappointment (I did!) and its a pleasant surprise to discover that it's a gem. I had pinned NMS as my personal GOTY but I think this has just pipped it; I've recorded it as so in Celer's GOTY voting thread :toot: .

I'm glad I went in mostly blind / with zero expectations (other than thinking/hoping it would be, at best, an okay game) due to not being a fan of Ueda's previous games.

Some of my favourite screens:

No story spoilers, they're more spoilers of moments between the Kid and Trico.

His stare would freak me out but this was back when we weren't bestest buds
Image

Colourful glass eye. Utter gooseberry fool(s).
Image

Aldro spin-off DLC, when?

Image

I turned around and...

His master's bud's voice
Image

Ceiling dogcat is watching you masturbate

D'aw
Image

That light...
Image

Seeing him move through that doorway with that light hitting his face and eyes. Wow.

My favourite section of the game had to be toward the end with Trico jumping the ever increasing gaps between the two towers.

I started playing this with WatchDogs 2 being GotY. Whilst The Last Guardian didn't depose WD 2, it did make a very good argument as to why it should be co-GotY.

You took some great shots, SoK, and that one is my personal favourite. It looks terrific!

You're quite right abou the fantastic lighting and colouring during the game - screenshots can look excellent but you don't get that sense of movement and awe unless you're actually playing. What a game* .

* Note: I don't think everyone would enjoy it and I can see why some folk may find it slow, dull and frustrating... but I thought it was wonderful.

Full version of screenshots can be seen via right click > view image.

Yeah, screens obviously cannot get across the movement, but they also lack much of the finer detail seen when playing the game; that light in the towers sections was *beautiful*. Screen doesn't do it justice.
