I got a gold trophy for watching him take a gooseberry fool. You can't put a price on that.

ok, so you want the game to be amazeballs, he simply points out where it fails and you get depressed :fp:

FFS, I said I stopped listening to his podcast because I found it too depressing. I stopped about a year or more ago, it had nothing to do with TLG.

I got up to the first proper glimpse at the grander story last night. Probably about 5 hours in.

The animation is full of neat little touches. If Trico's holding the boy by the collar, he'll grab at his shirt to stop it choking him. If you stop on a chain, the boy will shake off his hands one at a time and flex his fingers to adjust his grip. The physicality of him bumping around and tripping over himself is flawless, and this is all alongside Trico's own impossibly complex animation.

I've seen some people say it looks like an up-ressed PS3 game. They're talking gooseberry fool.

A few hours in and I can safely say, beyond any doubt whatsoever, that The Last Guardian redefines for me what videogames can sometimes (but don't very often) aspire to. Yes, the controls are janky, the camera often seems to have a mind of its own; it's not perfect - but no game ever is, right?

It's beautiful - this is what we mean by 'games as art'. In every way, too: character design, story, environment, music (fantastic orchestral score), ambience...I love it.

GOTY. No contest.

So that's the only time I've ever been jealous of you!! ;) Wish I could but I can't justify a ps4 just for this one game, however brilliant. :( As good as Ico??

Well caved and got a copy. From CeX of all places, someone had been kind enough to punt a copy an hour or so earlier so it cost me 3 found Snes games and the 4th Snes game got me £27 back in cash. Only went in to trade in towards Doom which is didn't even get.

I'll get it installed but I want to finish Ratchet first and I'm sure I'm near the end of that.

:o . Crumbs. No... this is gonna have to wait. I've dropped more than enough money on gaming this month. Sounds like it's definitely one to look out for, though.

Kj, I'm not sure if this will help, but Doom is £19.99 on the PS Store this weekend - or £14.99 on disc from Amazon.

I thought ICO was extraordinary and it remains a poem of a game, but TLG just seems to build on everything that made that game so special. I don't think I've ever felt such empathy for any game characters as fast as I've fallen for these two. They make me smile. You can actually feel their bond growing... it's a fantastic achievement by the developers. I'll stop gushing now.

No, they really aren't.

I'll agree with the camera, but the controls are fine, they are just different to most other 3rd person games, doesn't make them 'janky' (in the same way there's nothing actually wrong with the controls in ICO or SotC either).

I definitely feel like the size of the "walk" zone of the left stick is totally out of whack, and that barrel throwing direction could be more predictable, but for the most part the controls are fine.

How bad are the button press visual prompts? Reading emails from a friend and he is not a fan of them at all, especially in this. Are they prevalent throughout the game?

Cheers Mr J but it's probably best I miss it for now even though I kept picking up the box in CeX and putting it back while waiting for them to check the Snes carts. I have too much of an addiction to Titanfall 2 and this weekend is Double XP so I'll no doubt be trying to fit in as much grinding as possible :fp:

They lessen as it goes on, but they are still ridiculously overbearing

These hints have absolutely ruined the game for me. I've just went along some simple ledges and on every single one of them I've been prompted to 'hang' 'climb' and 'let go'.

They take up at least a third of the width of the screen too.

Awful

Hopefully there will be a patch that gives the option of turning them off.

I really hope so, as this is shelved until then - sometimes three pompts appear on screen at the same time. Unreal.
