So, I've completed it a few days ago and it's definitely my Game of the Year 2016. Dare I say, it's one of the best games of all time and I have never experienced anything like it. I mean, the bond with Trico and you could see the development of his behaviour during the journey from the beginning to the end. It was just... amazing. Not only this, most of you covered what I want to say as well.

Also, I do not care what the others said or have been gave some negative comments, but I think it is just simply astonishing and a masterpiece.

Trico.

Some screenshots I'd taken throughout the game, most likely contain location spoilers..

Ok, this still hasn't entirely clicked but I've started to enjoy it.The section with the Eye-glass mobile was stunning, as was the collapsing bridge. These momentary bits of brilliance still aren't making up for the flaws though. I love Trico, he's one of the most convincing AIs ever put into a game, but the technical problems here mean he's starring in a game that does not do him justice.

Unless it gets markedly better, it's a fun but annoying game with great scenery and an amazing companion that I'd plop straight into the 7/10 pile.

Some cracking shots. Last one especially so.

I dunno why exactly, but that final building... I loved the look of the interior.

The view from the top of the tower near the end is one of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen in videgames. I actually got goosebumps while playing it. And the lighting effects on Trico's feathers!

I like the one where you look down (or maybe it's a cinematic shot...) and it's like something out of a Souls game.

So having rented this from Boomerang and played an hour so far I have to ask....When does it start getting any good? So far it's just been an hour of "huh, well that's pretty I guess" along with some of the worst controlling platforming of the generation so far.

In about 7-8 hours in. Bar a few 20 second highlights, it hasn't gotten any better than the first few hours.

You're dead inside.

Just kidding, perhaps it just isn't for you, I loved it and felt gutted when I finally finished it, like coming to the end of a good book. I suppose if you've already put in this much time, you may as well finish it.....

It's far from the worst game I've ever played, but god damn, to think people have been anticipating this for what, a decade now? It must be utterly soul crushing that after all that hype and build up and practically gaming legend, what you end up getting is not anything that's utterly terrible, but certainly nothing special either.

Don't go being too disappointed for them. It's not for nothing that the game has made so many GotY lists. (Unless you think the majority of them are in denial.) I wasn't a fan of their previous games (probably played all of 30 minutes of both), but I bloody loved this.

I think it's a bit of a marmite game, but in my view and many others, it's something very special indeed.

It's a seriously beautiful game and managed to get my feels going more than once. Real pleasure to play and definitely my 2016 GOTY.

Nothing Special? What?

The game is a masterpiece. I have zero qualms in saying that, and i mean it 100% honestly and without hyperbole. Its one of the most unique, amazing, incredible gaming experiences ive had in 30 years of gaming. I get it has flaws, but what game doesnt? You can either complain about its flaws, or see past them to one of the best experiences of all time in gaming terms. It is an incredible achievement. My big PS4 games this Christmas were TLG and Uncharted 4. UC4 is cited as a 10/10 masterpiece, GOTYAY, etc, but i found it more of a slogging chore despite its 10/10 production values and hollywood scriptwriting, than anything in TLG. It feels like ive been playing UC4 forever with no end in sight, whereas TLG flew by and i didnt want it to end.

It really is fascinating to me how the same piece of media can provoke such different opinions. In my 7 or so hours with it I've found almost nothing, save Trico, unique or interesting about this game. The backgrounds are lovely but monotone, the puzzles cleverly constructed but repetitious. The controls are 2003 levels of awful, and camera doubly so. The framerate often dips into the 10-15 fps range. The goodwill generated by an AI dog will only carry you so far.

I enjoyed UC4 far more, that being a solid 8/10 game. This is a 6 or maybe 7 at a push. For me, obvs.

I completely agree, though I scored it a 5 in the 'Last Game You Finished' thread - possibly lost a point because I found Treacle (deliberate name change to reflect the fluidity of the dumb animal) to be utterly stupid and frustrating.

I think he just heard you calling him a dumb animal and deliberately didn't listen to you

Tried again but this just isn't clicking at all with me.

It looks nice sure, but it's still not even competing visually with Uncharted 4, and that's comparing TLG on a PS4 Pro and UC4 on a regular PS4.
The controls are frankly an abomination and the camera barely qualifies as acceptable.

Even the AI for Trico was never that impressive to me. A lot of it seemed scripted more than anything else. Trying to climb on him was utterly awful as once you finally got him into position, when you start climbing he just starts moving all over the place making any attempts at climbing more time consuming and difficult than it needed to be.
I'm in no doubt that at least some of the praise this game receives really is down to denial due to the length of time people have anticipated and hyped this game. Had it been released by an unknown studio without such long term build up I seriously doubt it would be getting the praise it does.

Honestly can't see how this can get higher than 5 or 6 out of 10.

EDGE's Game of the Year, no less. Personally, I thought that was a strange decision, but...well, EDGE. As someone else said, it's a bit of a Marmite game - you either buy into all its idiosyncrasies and slightly under par foibles or you know it's just not for you. I love it, but I can see its faults and it's a shame. GOTY, though? Not so sure.
