I'm really intrigued to see how they're gonna pan out. Jim Sterling has hinted that he's gonna stick the boot in, but that's not exactly an unusual scenario.

Despite my frustrations with how the Kickstarter was managed I genuinely hope it is a good game.

We really need great 3D platformers this gen, so far Mario 3D World and Ratchet & Clank are the only two I can think of.

Out of interest, what was your issue with the Kickstarter? The Wii U issue or something else? Asking for... research. :shifty:

GameSpot 6, Polygon 5.5, IGN 7...not really 'bad' is it, more like average/okay/decent.

Reviews seem to be all over the place. Some more positive ones.

XGN 8/10
http://www.xgn.nl/review/yooka-laylee-review

4/5
The Guardian

7/10
Gamecentral

Eurogamer (no score)
A sumptuous, diverting homage to a bygone era in game design that should keep fans of the old school hooked, even if it doesn't set the world on fire

8/10
PC World

Jim Sterling looking for attention again or something? :dread: 2/10 is a score you give something that barely functions as a game.

I'll probably pick it up when it comes out on the Switch - like Snake Pass, it's the kind of thing that'll pass some time on the train. I wouldn't use up my precious TV gaming time on it, though.

Getting worse scores than Mass Effect Andromeda must be utter dog gooseberry fool.

It's a bit of a shame that I feel as I do about, Pell. Here goes...

+ Positive Kickstarter launch; I was excited to be on board!

+ Plenty of progress updates issued via Kickstarter and email

- I suspected ambitions were being stretched a bit too far when Team 17 came on board. This was a Kickstarter-funded project, paid for by backers... why were Playtonic linking up with this publisher?

- From the Kickstarter launch on 1 May 2015 through to the update of 13 October 2016 (the original targeted launch date) Playtonic made no mention that there wouldn't ba a Wii U version...

- ...and then, on 16 December, they said that they were not gonna publish a U version. Yep, several paragraphs into their update (after telling us about other formats and showing boxes of them!) they said "After many challenging months, we’re finally able to update you on the Wii U version of Yooka-Laylee and announce a number of developments. The Playtonic team is sad to confirm that despite our best efforts and exploring every possible avenue, we’ve encountered unforeseen technical issues that unfortunately mean it will be impossible for us to release the game on Wii U as initially planned." Huh?!? No mention of these "many challenging months" or "technical issues" had ever been made before! How had they been developing the gamefor 18 months (past the original target launch) without saying that there were a few probs?

- Okay, problems can happen. But the way Playtonic (or Team 17?) handled the cancelation - i.e. by hiding the news away in a launch message update that was awash with screenshots of the packaged game for other formats - didn't feel particularly sensitive or professional. The subsequent radio silence until January 2017 (Playtonic did not respond to queries or comments at all in the backer comments log) then just made a tough situation a whole lot worse.

I suspect that Playtonic started out with good intentions but, upon reflection, it feels like the game hype got too big for them to manage. Why were YouTube "celebrities" (i.e. JonTron) being invited (paid?) to be in the game? How did they get into a situation where backers were moaning that they could get the disc copy cheaper from Amazon than via the Kickstarter? Playtonic are a small team and I suspect that the Team 17 takeover (partnership?) hasn't really helped. What started out at as being a well-funded, cool retro-styled downloadable game for cult fans has turned into a major £35 boxed release that is now getting mediocre reviews.

I don't think Playtonic are "bad"; more that their exciting but small project was expanded into something where disappointment was inevitable.

Oh get out of town! We've all been gamers long enough to know that isn't good.

The game was built for people who like 90s platformers. The entire thing emulates them and oozes what made them them. Reviewers won't like that.

This game was made for fans of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie. Not for people who like modern games.

Sounds like it has major performance issues on Xbox One. Here's hoping for a patch to fix some technical problems on both platforms.

He really liked it apart from that, though.

Still looking forward to picking it up next week :toot:

Was he expecting Bloodborne? It's a platformer.

Has anyone actually had a refund for the Wii U version yet?

Yes, Grin - I got mine and, to the best of my knowledge, I believe that everyone who backed the U version and asked for a refund has done so, too.

That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. He's describing every platformer ever made, there.

Well at least it hasn't become Mighty No 9-2.

Probably wait til it's on sale.
