The game itself does look good, but a lack of any way to 'win' kind of puts me off. The game is basically down to how long you can survive before you die isn't it?

There's no way to win in an apocolypse :P

I know, I just don't like it :D

That's probably the reason I never liked the Planet of the Apes series and have no interest in the upcoming Rise of the Planet of the Apes, despite being a huge sci-fi fan.

There's a demo out now http://www.projectzomboid.com/test666/P ... 0_1_4c.zip

Unfortunately the actual game has been temporarily taken down due to pirates:
Pirates have made a version of the game that auto-downloads Project Zomboid from our server whenever the player clicks an ‘update’ button.

We’ve always turned a blind eye to pirate copies, even on occasion recommending people who had problems with the legit version try a pirate version until the issues are resolved. We realise the potential viral benefits of pirate copies, and while obviously we’d prefer people to purchase our issue is not with those.

However, these ‘auto updating’ versions of the game could screw us completely. We have a cloud based distribution model, where the files are copied all over the world and are served to players on request, which means we are charged money for people downloading the game. Whether piracy actually amounts to lost sales we’re not going to get into. The possibility that it raises awareness and promotes the game cannot be ignored, but the difference is offline versions on torrents, which we’ve been largely unconcerned about, do not cost us real money, only potential money, and even then we can’t really guess at what the net effect is. Likewise people who download the game through our website only download it when there is a new version, so once every week or so. These new pirate copies have an ‘update now’ button which will download the game every time it’s clicked, potentially every time the game is run by everyone using it.

Apologies for everyone who’s purchased the game, but this has the potential to cost some of the development funds we’ve made so far, and we can’t risk it. We may be overreacting. But we have no idea of the numbers that could be involved and since an auto-updating pirate version effectively removes any need to buy the game and suggests they are ‘in it for the long haul’ if they are playing the version for numerous updates, we can’t count on ‘try before you buy’ sale conversions from them.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Read about this in PC Gamer. It sounds pretty terrific.

What a bunch of wankers. Not the pirates but these devs themselves.

They waste far too much time for people selling an unfinished product. Someone mentioned this and they sent out a massive strawberry float you to their fans by saying in a really sarcastic manner "hey we're so sorry for writing on a blog, we won't ever do it again all because of you people wanting your moneys worth".

What a bunch of assholes. Notch sold minecraft on the goodwill of the community and people pirated his game endlessly and he's still a millionaire with a company.

strawberry float off, $ilva. Amazingly, developers do have to eat and sleep occasionally. They're working absolutely mental hours on this game and have had to face a number of tricky issues - these pirate wankers being just the latest problem.

The pirates are the wankers here. Jesus.

strawberry float off gayhours, for people who have already paid their money, we don't need a slap in the face from whiny developers who don't know how to foster the goodwill of people who gave them their money. I'm a legit customer but these guys are crying at everyone but themselves.

I'd imagine people who are into Minecraft are more grown up than the average PZ fan. PZ will appeal to ALL ages, whereas 10, 11, 12 year old kids probably don't have the patience for MC. The implication then being that you can't rely on the goodwill of the community in this case. The devs shouldn't have released this buggy mess before it was closer to being finished but they did (for some extra money because of pirates) and now it's all spiralling out of control and the best move is to take it offline, finish it, and put it back online. Possibly with some extra exclusive items or game modes for those that purchased it early and have been inconvenienced.

That the rest of us can then pirate :shifty:

If the developers are having to pay for every download I don't see the problem with them taking it down until this loophole is fixed.

You can't win against pirates.

It's been proven time and time again.

The best thing notch did was to shut his mouth and just keep plodding away and let the quality of the product speak for itself instead of whining at their fanbase about pirates or responding to fans criticism about the devs not really releasing enough content regularly enough.

Good pc games sell when they're good. PC gamers are savvy, and minecraft is a great game which people recognised and decided to support. We even had gamers on grcade who I linked to a free version of who ended up buying the whole game when they realised that it was something worth supporting.

It doesn't sound like you've played PZ yet pacman, definitely give it a go. It ain't a game for kids, minecraft is more accessible to kids than PZ is.

Yeah I've watched Let's Plays on Youtube but admittedly that's it. Seems like the kind of thing kids would love and talk about in the schoolyard though, we were all playing GTA when we were young. Whether or not they would know how to pirate though... hmm.

This is amazing.

Been playing for like an hour and the challenge is so good.

I survived for 1 week one time and I opened my door to go outside with shotgun at the ready, I got MONGED by 20 zombies! :fp:

No, this game just ain't that easy for kids. For one thing, GTA has easier controls and gameplay. This is harder, it actually requires some thought and fore-planning to survive.

It sounds like that's exactly what they've been doing up to this point. This situation is a bit different here as the pirated versions are now literally draining the dev's money, and that's something they need to sort out. They're stopping updates for legitimate versions too.

One again, legitimate customers suffer because the devs are too busy concerned with fighting piracy instead of trying to sell their game. Idiots.

If you look at their blogs, what they've been doing is whining at their fanbase about piracy and looking mighty unprofessional about it.

Are you incapable of reading, or just intentionally stupid/trolling?

Are you stupid or just stupid?

They allowed piracy to happen via their cloud distribution, and now they're whining about it. It's their decisions biting them in the arse, but I've put down my money to support them already so I've got no recourse on that if they decide to waste time fighting piracy.
