I have decided to revive my Vita, and realised I have an almost intimidating number of games unplayed on it.

Anyway, remembered I was only a small way into Virtue's Last Reward, so cranked that back up again.

I want to like it. I really do. But I think I was 'playing' for about 15 minutes the other night and I swear all I did was press the X button repeatedly to get through a tonne of hesitant dialogue.

Having to press the button three times just to get past a character saying

"..."

Is strawberry floating ridiculous.

By the time I got past the dialogue my gaming 'window' was closed and I had to turn the machine off. It's like waiting for PSN updates.

Can anyone convince me that it's worth carrying on?

If it's anything like 999, which I strongly suspect, then it's a visual novel with a few puzzles. You'll spend the vast majority of your time reading so treat it like a slightly interactive book. 999 is fantastic and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a gripping story. I'm expecting great things from VLR but probably won't like it if you're expecting a lot of interactivity.

After 999, I do think that it's a shame to give up on games like this just because they're more like books. Despite the radical lack of gameplay, 999 was very compelling and hopefully the same can be said for VLR.

Anyone pick up Stranger of Sword City today or plan to? I couldn't justify it with Yo-Kai Watch today, Ratchet & Clank last week and Uncharted 4 due shortly, but I'm really tempted to give it a go. I'm not sure if I'm a DRPG fan, I've only really played and enjoyed Persona Q, never touched any of the Etrian games or anything like that. I love the art style though and it's really making me think about picking it up.

I'm a sucker for Etrian Odyssey games so I'm definitely interested. Is it on the EU store yet? Couldn't find it earlier.

I know its a bit of a tangent, but has anyone else been looking at the JXD S192...

Obviously its not the best looking handheld device ever made, but when its available it will probably be the most powerful handheld gaming platform on the market. Wondered if anyone was tempted to upgrade. Obviously you are then stuck with Android as your platform, not a problem for emulation, but somewhat limited in terms of new games designed for use with physical controls.

Weird to think that some relatively obscure Chinese manufacturer will be in a position that has till now been taken by a major company producing a dedicated locked down gaming machine.

Full disclosure - I work for mad catz and am pointing this out for comparison, not as an advert.

We made this, the Lynx 9, which is a gamepad that among other things, splits apart to mount to your tablet. Offers the same experience as the above except you can swap out the tablet when you upgrade to a new one. Just mentioning it because experiences like that are available already. Theres also this like the nvidia shield for example which do the same sort of thing.

There are a few similar devices to that, but its not the same as having those controls built into the device itself. I think if you are after a gaming device then built in controls are more desirable than the flexibility of an add-on like that.

True. The dream would be standardised buttons on all phones and tablets, maybe sliding out like on the psp go.

I had (still have somewhere actually) an Xperia Play (the phone with slide out gaming pad), was an interesting phone but to be honest I never really used the controls on it to play games very often.

A single device with multiple functions might sound like a good idea in theory, but in practice it normally comes at the expense of not being particularly good at any of those things.

Sure you can, but the Vita is nowhere near as powerful as that JXD machine.

EDIT - Just a little look around and it might be even worse, seems like Vita emulation runs through what that Vita uses to emulate PSP games.

Tbh: all I want are more SNES re-releases. Can't believe that Nintendo haven't announced more games since the initial batch...

I like the look of that JXD thing. With its huge screen, proper grips, twin sticks and four shoulder buttons, it looks like the Vita probably should have done. (I never take my Vita anywhere so would sacrifice portability in exchange for better remote play and increased comfort).

It's too expensive for me at the moment, but I'm not saying it's too expensive for what it is. Looks decent.

Ad - I love the idea that you work for a company that spells 'cats' with a 'z'. That must eat you up inside.

Anyone buy Severed? Picked it up last night based on the great reviews. Also got Axiom Verge last week which I've been slowly making my way through. Great strawberry floating game. All of a sudden I'm playing my Vita again.

Really looking forward to axiom verge, will wait till its about £5 as £15 seems steep.

£15 for a good sized Metroidvania is far from steep... The strawberry float?

I've got strawberry floating loads of retail and digital games I bought full price sat there unplayed, I'm not paying £15 for something that in all likelihood will be a fiver later on when I get to it. Made that mistake buying everybody's gone to the rapture at £17, then the strawberry floating thing was on sale for about £6 a month later.
