I'm asking on behalf of a friend here who wants a PS3, but he wants BC. I keep on telling him the new PS3 have emulation software on them. I'm not making that up am I? I could've swore I read that somewhere. Cheers lads.

Also, assuming it exists, how is the emulation software compared to 60GB BC?

Only the old, BC, 60GB model can play PS2 games. They removed the emulation software from the newer models.

They can all play PS1 games.

Nope, the only model here that can play PS2 games at all is the 60gb.

I don't think I could bring myself to play PS1 games on my PS3. On a big TV it would make the baby Jesus cry.

Didn't some rumour start this year that a autumn PSN update would include a software backwards compatibility for all playstation 3's?

Was this ever confirmed or denied?

This makes me even gutted-er that my 60Gb got pinched. The insurance company'll be replacing it with an 80Gb next month, but I'll genuinely miss the backwards compatability. And SD card slot for that matter (unless that's still included on the latest model). :(

Afraid not, they have gone. the 80gb is just the 40gb with a bigger HDD, no other changes.

It is rather easy to upgrade the HD from the 40gb versions too, im considering moving up to 160gb as the PS3 has become my most used media player for my HD-TV as it seems to play things a lot easier from my network than the 360 does so im considering the bigger HD for my TV show collections I have stored on my NAT drive.

In fairness, you can just buy a PS2 to go with it. It's not even like you'll notice the slimline lurking in the shadows behind the mighty behemoth.

I'll shortly be going TV-less. Or at least, I thought I would be until the music from Ico came up on random on my iPod the other day. I thought to myself "I can't do without this!". Now, if Sony gave a damn in the slightest about the value of games as a medium, as an artform, as anything more than a mere cash-cow, they would still include backward compatibility. Would a movie studio actively keep its classics from new consumers? Sure, I probably will buy a PS2 instead (my ex has the old one), but I would have liked some upscaling, and I would have liked a new machine into the bargain. I would have felt a lot more positive about things that way. As it is, I'm staying away from PS3 for as long as possible (ie. until Team Ico's next game).

Of course I did, I'm a gamer.

I would be incredibly suprised if PS2 games didn't make their way on to the Playstation store in the future. I don't think they'll ever re-introduce backwards compatibility for disc based games but they wouldn't overlook such an obvious revenue stream. Whether people would be prepared to pay again for a game they already have on disc is another matter.
