PostPS3 for LittleBigPlanet
by Skullfire » Wed Apr 22, 2009 1:30 am

Hi everyone, I have a question for you all. Is LittleBigPlanet alone worth buying a PS3 for?

Seriously, I'm not messing about; please hear me out.

This game looks really quirky and fun - different from anything else out there - and it is something that I think I would enjoy very much. And possibly the girlfriend as well - I assume it support offline multiplayer?

The problem is that at the moment, there aren't really any other PS3 games that I'm really interested in, apart from a few of the exclusive PSN games like Flower, flOw, Super Stardust, Everyday Shooter, PixelJunk Monsters, etc... This is just how I feel; I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything.

The next big game (that I know of so far) which I'm really interested in, is God of War 3; but I believe that this is still some time off. Saying that, if I do end up buying a PS3, there are probably one or two games out now that I wouldn't mind getting, but nothing that I really hanker for. Also Home seems like it might be good for a laugh.

I will be honest, I'm really happy with the 360 and I'll probably continue to buy the majority of games on this platform. I also don't want to make the same mistake as with another console I bought previously which after a few months play wasn't switched on again for ages.

However, as I said LBP is a game that I really want to play. I have also been thinking that it's maybe time to get a Blu-Ray player and although there are some cheaper ones on the market, the PS3 seems to come out on top every time.

I'm also a bit worried that the longer I wait, I will be missing out on more and more 'for a imited time only' DLC for LBP.

So considering the above, I'm really interested in the opinion of PS3 owners, especially those with LBP. Please, I sincerely hope this post doesn't result in a console wars thread.

So once again, my question is: Is LittleBigPlanet worth buying a PS3 for?

Are you interested in Valkyria Chronicles? If not, then you probably should be at least open to falling in love with it.

I would say the PS3 isn't worth it for LBP alone but it is worth it for LBP AND the other great exclusives it has, but then you kinda shot that theory down in your opening post by saying you weren't interested in most of them. So I'd have to say that it isn't worth it, no. :(

Maybe I worded that a bit wrong. What I mean is, that none of the other exclusives make me want to go out and buy a PS3; i.e. I feel I can live without them. LBP on the other hand seems to be calling my name every time I see it in action.

However, if I were to get a PS3 because of LBP, I would most likely pick up a few of those other exclusives along the way.

Also thanks for suggesting Valkyria Chronicles. I checked out the game site and I certainly like art style and setting of the game. What does it play like? I don't mind a good RPG, although I always seem to prefer the western styled ones. I guess it's the turned based and random battles that I dislike the most.

Oh, in that case, YES! I wouldn't worry too much about the "limited time" LBP DLC, as so far you haven't missed anything major as they've only limited the holiday items (and I bet they'll return in some form next year too).

It doesn't really play like any other game I can think of. It's a Real Time but Turn Based Strategy game set during a fictional version of Europe in the middle of events similar to World War II. Think Advance Wars/Fire Emblem, except instead of moving your troops in a grid you actually move them in real time and aim manually. Headshots do more damage than body shots, hit the back back of Tanks for more damage etc... It doesn't use Fog of War either, you can simply see as far as you can see. So hiding behind trees or in tall grass keeps you hidden, but standing in the middle of the open can get you sniped from a mile away. It plays quite like an action game, rather than any comparable strategy game, but it's got just as much, if not more strategy than them too.

The plot, characters, voice work and localisation are all excellent. Melatonin has even given himself a Valkyria Avatar and signature as a sign of how much he loves the game, and Melatonin has a good taste in games. It's packed full of innovation, and really should be declared a sub-genre in it's own right. There is a demo on the PSN that must be tried by everyone who owns a PS3. It's also made by the team that created Skies of Arcadia, if that means anything to you. It's not only one of the best games on the PS3, it's one of the best games I've ever played.

I love it (if that wasn't already obvious!), and anyone with a soul will too!

No, it's not. Well, not unless you're going to play it in a social setting with multiple controllers, anyway. The game is coming to PSP.

No single game is worth buying one console for.

Luckily the PS3 now has a large number of quality titles and some console features. So in that respect yes buy a PS3 for Little Big Planet but stay for the rest of the great games and features the PS3 has.

Also listen to TAP. Valkyria Chronicles is strawberry floating amazing.

i think i need to rent it again. I thought it was good but didn't get that feeling from it. Time for a second try.

Overall I'd agree with all you say there, well worth it now. All the current gen consoles are worth owning.

No, I don't think so, not when the machine is £300.

But in reality you're probably going to use it for more than just that game, aren't you? There's about 10 decent exclusives which I'd say would make it worthwhile.

Exactly what I was going to say.

But I was also going to add that LBP is my favourite game so far this gen. The PS3 has quite a lot of good games out for it now, so I very much doubt this would be the only game you buy for it.

The answer is no, not on its own.

But as others have pointed out, there are plenty of reasons to own a PS3, with Blu-Ray playback being another one.

ive owned the ps3 for about a year now and its one of my favourite consoles ive owned in a long time. I never actually owned a sony console before ( unless you count a ps1 which got stolen 3 days later) . I use it nearly everyday and i have some great games for it. The games i would recommend are:

Uncharted
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
Killzone 2
Burnout Paradise
Metal Gear Solid 4
Fifa 09
Dead SPace
Virtua FIghter 5
Soul Calibur 4

and then for PSN

Flower
Riff : everyday Shooter
PixelJunk Eden

I also use the PS3 constantly for any downloaded movies, playing music and watching Blu rays .Its a great machine, also its very quiet and very open to peripherals , so you can use pretty much any headset, use a mouse and keyboard to browse the internet and plug in usb devices to watch movies/films from. As you can tell i like it, if you ahve the cash i would say buy one.

I have to be honest and say no. At the price, I couldn't justify buying a PS3 just for LBP.

Well, it depends how much a single game will mean to you. I decided not to get a Xbox 360 at launch because there weren't any stand out games - King Kong and Perfect Dark just didn't draw me in. But I did decide to buy a 360 Elite when Halo 3 launched because I really wanted to play that game online with my friends. If I could only play Halo 3 on my 360 then £299 might seem a lot for one game, but I think a game that is a system seller is more about providing a good jumping on point that will then introduce you and make available all the other good games on a platform.

So Skullfire, £299 is a bit much if you will only ever play LittleBigPlanet. However, if you intend to buy some of the other exclusive games that are coming out for the PlayStation 3 and watch Blu-ray movies then LBP is a great game to get you started on a console that you might get 5 years use out of. 8-)

If you are very creative, Mr Skullfire then yes.

But if you buy PS3, make sure you get other exclusives too which are amazing, it isn't 2007 anymore you know. PS3 is a blu ray player too so you'd get your favourite movies on blu ray. (Bourne movies are brilliant!)

Promise us you get Uncharted too, it is strawberry floating brilliant!

I got my PS3 for BluRay as much as anything as I had a new HDTV. I use it mostly for movies and exclusives.

I don't think it is worth £300 for LBP alone. If you have a 360 already I think you should wait for a price drop unless you can afford it. For someone with no HD console then I think the PS3 is as strong a contender as the 360 now. 2009 wil likely have better exclsives on the PS3 as well as the top multi platform games.

If you do get a PS3 check out Uncharted, one of my games of the generation.
