PostPS3 game audio through headset/speakers - SOLVED
by OrangeRKN » Sun Sep 06, 2015 9:09 pm

PS3 owners I require your help

My girlfriend has bought a monitor for uni to play PS3 on. The monitor has no speakers, and it has no audio output. The PS3 connects via HDMI. She has a usb headset for the PS3. We need to find an inexpensive way of getting game audio, either through the headset or through speakers that can connect to the PS3.

The internet claims this is non-trivial.

Can anyone help?

I think you could choose to direct all sound to the headset, OR.

PlayStation guidance wrote:If you also intend to use the headset to output audio, ensure that it is registered as an audio output device on the PS3 system by accessing the XMB Menu, choosing [ Settings] > [Accessory Settings] > [Audio Device Settings] > [Output Device] and selecting your headset from the list.

Yeah, we tried that. It's just chat audio, not game audio. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Ah.... maybe try this alternative, dude:

If you have your PS3 connected to your TV via HDMI and you are unable to hear game audio through your headset, please check the following settings:

For STEREO headsets:

-  Go to Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings
-  Change HDMI to Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI.
-  Go to Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Multi-Output, and turn this feature ON.

Cool, will give it a go.

The headset is USB not AV though (if AV headsets are even a thing) so we'll see

You can easily have video over hdmi and audio through red and white pins using the ps2 style av cable that came with it

What he said, if you're connecting to the monitor via HDMI then use the supplied av cable (multi to 3 plugs) and feed the red and white into one of these.

You can then plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack.

That is however a line level signal so it could be a bit quiet. If the impedance of the headphones is good it should be an OK volume. This basically means the headphones suck more volume out of that output. It can also impede the sound quality. You might be better of with speakers that way. And they will need to be amplified (so anything with a volume knob, not speakers with just speaker cable). Most good speaker sets will themselves include a headphone socket.

There a loads of options for that, I'd start another thread asking about speakers. I would suggest M-audio AV20 or 40 if they still make those, the little Aego sets are good although the subwoofer/amp unit is massive, and there are some OK Logitech and Creative sets if you don't cheap out. Other options from an pro audio background are Yamaha, Alesis and some others, basically your low end "monitors" (that are actually much better than most the plastic tat you'd get from Argos etc aimed at a consumer market).

Sennheiser and AKG and Audio Technica make great headphones on the mid range price range (senny do some low price ones too). They're more likely to pull a good signal from the PS3 output.

Yet another option could be a headphone amp with an optical input.
