PostAPOCALYPS3 Averted! PS3 back online baby. o/

PS3 phats are currently not working as expected. Due to an internal clock/calender bug. Sit tight and wait on an official fix or statement from Sony.

PS3 Slim owners are not going to be affected so carry on playing(nothing lulz).
As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.
As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Might want to put a big warning in the thread title:
Note to everyone: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHECK IF PSN IS WORKING OR NOT. Wait for an official word on the fix.

Taking this gamble has a high probability that your PS3 will:

1. Erase the trophy information;
2. Give you error for certain PSN syncing games;
3. Reset the PS3 date;
4. Mess up everything you downloaded from PSN (including themes).

Some games won't work offline either.

Sony's Twitter:
We're aware that many of you are having problems connection to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.

Error in the calendar application seems to be whats causing it.

Quoted from Gaf -

Interesting facts:

1. Error 8001050f is displayed when trying to sign into PSN
2. The error is displayed quickly, as if it doesn't even try to connect
3. Affected downloadable titles show 8001050f on launch without even trying to connect to PSN
4. Your clock gets reset
5. The problem started at midnight
6. Dynamic themes show up as "corrupted"

This seems to sum up everything thats gone tits up quite nicely.

Is this because of the leap year?

Sucks to be a PS3 owner, this is bad news too.

This isn't a leap year, but the older PS3s may be thinking it's supposed to be a leap year. The bug triggered at 12am GMT.

Hmm, how do you roll out a patch for a console that can't connect to the Internet?

I'm aware of PC firmware downloads, but they can't rely on customers owning additional hardware for the fix. And I wonder how it affects offline PS3s.

What happens if this is a hardware bug? Hopefully its something that can be fixed with an emergency firmware update.

Amusingly you can connect to the internet through the browser, its PSN that you can't connect to.

This could be a huge problem for Sony if they can't roll out an update to the affected consoles.

Was playing FIFA with friends and then went to change my own profile and it wouldn't let me start the game. Said that trophy information couldn't be updated or something and quit out.

Don't know what that means really. Maybe it's screwed my trophies up? Don't really care about that to be honest. The PS3 only gets used for FIFA multiplayer anyway. And Blu-rays.

Sucks if it messes with people's games. Also it's stupid if you can't start a game without being logged in - what about people who don't have their PS3s hooked up to the internet, how does that work?

I've been online most of the evening without a single problem/hitch/boot/disconnect/error etc...
