PostPS3 production costs down a whopping 70%...
by KK » Fri Jul 31, 2009 11:45 am

...can someone say price cut?

Computerandvideogames.com wrote:Sony CEO and executive VP, Nobuyuki Oneda, has revealed that production costs for the PS3 have dropped since its 2006 release by 70 percent.

"The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule," said Oneda in a recent investors conference call.

Oneda was cagey on specifics, saying: "We don't disclose how much of the PS3, specifically the cost deduction was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule."

But he went on to disclose production costs on the Blu-ray-capable machine are down "about 70%, roughly speaking".

As noted, although Sony never officially revealed the cost price of PS3s at launch, it was widely believed to cost around $800 or around £430 per unit to produce. That puts current cost price at around £140.

So we may see that £299 price tag on 80GB PS3s fall soon.

I think some form of a price cut this Christmas is nigh on guaranteed.

I nearly bought one yesterday... but snapped myself out of it.

I'm waiting for that price cut. And I think so are many hundreds/thousands of other gamers.
If Sony hadn't been so stubborn, and they had lowered the price months ago, they'd have a much larger install base of users and make more revenue from game sales.

Might be too little, too late.

Yep, me too.

There is some great stuff on the PS3 that I'd love to try, but I can't justify the high cost of it.
I'll definitely get one at some point, however when I get it is up to Sony

This is good news, I might flog my 60GB while it's still worth something, then pick up a Slim.

I'm waiting for a sub £200 bundle. If it never happens I can live with it though, there are really only a handful of exclusives I'm interested in, and I much prefer the 360 controller and Live which pretty much sorts out the multiformat choices.

I got my PS3 over a year ago so the fact that the price has not dropped for so long makes me feel like I have not lost out :o

I don't use it much for gaming tbh, but I am a huge movie fan so I have lots of BluRay films for it and they do look good. With the line up of exclusives coming up I will play some more games soon, but most of the time I will stick to my 360 for convenience.

This. I don't mind buying it rather early, to be honest. When I do spend alot of time with my Xbox 360 and Wii, I still enjoy using my PS3 for PSN games, some exclusive titles & of course, better media player. It being Bluray too was nice bonus as well :)

Still, there should be price drop if they want to attract new customers.

If this does mean a price cut on the PS3, I might have to finally pick one up.

Like Lewis and fair few others round here, I'm just waiting for it become a financially viable purchase. PS3 has more than enough good games of its own by now. I want in - so, over to Sony...

One thing about Uncharted for me is I liked it, the thing about Tomb Raider is I didn't. Make of that what you will.
