Well, that's an interesting point. As far as I know with Pro the devs themselves patch the games to upscale to 4K am I right?

I wonder if there is room in Sony and MS to do the patches themselves. MS make 360 games back compat entirely in house with no input from devs other than permission, would that be an option at all?

360 BC uses emulation with no modification to the game's code, am I right?

To make games run in UHD the developers have to do it due to the differing nature of each game's engine.

"Upscaling" is more of a post-processing thing that doesn't really improve the image that much compared to its original render. It's a gimmicy term that TV manufacturers love to use these days, especially as sales are so low.

Ah yes, I suppose it's different. BC is entirely emulation but the update they emulator with each new game added to keep on ironing out frame pacing issues that arise. The way it upscales I suppose could be worked on and patched.

Emulation seems to be pretty expensive for GPUs though, that's why previous gen games always run at the same resolution as they did originally.

I'd imagine PS5/Xbox Two shouldn't have any problems doing BC WITHOUT emulation due to them sticking with X86 CPU architecture.

I know a chap that bought a Pro and he only has a 1080p TV set, am I right in thinking when he comes swooning about how the framerate etc for FFXV, Watchdogs 2, Hitman etc is so much improved and looks a lot 'cleaner' that he is - as suspected - talking utter shite?

I think hes trying to justify it to himself since I said I wouldn't get one without a 4K TV.

Not necessarily. Some games have been patched to allow better frame rates or other graphical effects for the Pro version in 1080p.

Some use supersampling where they render in UHD but display in HD so that the jaggies disappear.

I have a Pro and I've kept my old PS4. The differences I have spotted are:

+ The Pro is a lot faster at downloading; for my wifi setup, the 5 Ghz adapter makes a big difference
+ The front end works - perhaps - *slightly* faster
+ Digital Foundry tells me that the The Last Guardian runs smoother on the Pro than on the standard PS4

Other than that, I think some stuff like shadows may be improved but, to be honest, it's not something that I have found to be hugely noticeable. Of course, I play in 1080p mode so folk with 4K televisions will see greater advantages.

I am hoping that we see games coming out this year which make more use of the additional power for 1080p displays.

I have a 4K TV but don't have a PS4 Pro. If anything I'm more likely to purchase a Xbox One S because at least it has a 4K Blu Ray player and is £100 cheaper, even if I'm not massively fussed about it. The biggest reason though, aside from having a 20th anniversary PS4 that I don't want to box up yet, is because I just don't think the improvements warrant shelling out another £350 for. The TV is already doing a fantastic job of upscalling, the big 4K streaming services are built-in, and the standard PS4 can also do HDR.

You cant beat optical media when it comes to video picture quality.

Hopefully UHD Blu-ray will be the standard disc for mat for next gen games meaning movie support is included

I bought a 65" 4K TV around 8 or so months ago. I had recently moved from an apartment to a house and the viewing distance to my current TV increased a fair amount so it seemed too small :shifty:

There was a one day special on at Best Buy when I bought the TV, so I justified it to myself because of the big saving (the same set is still going for nearly $1000 more than I paid for it).

Most Netflix 4K streams don't look hugely better than 1080p ones other than the pointless showcase ones that are just shots of rivers and mountains etc. Some 4K YouTube videos look great, as does stuff I record in 4K on my phone, but overall I would say that if I'd bought a new TV specifically for 4K then I would be disappointed. Obviously the only way to get top quality 4K content will be to buy a UHD Bluray player but so far there aren't enough movies available and the discs are still extortionate.

I traded my PS4 for a Pro to get more 4K content and I would say that I'm fairly pleased with the results. HDR makes more of a noticeable difference to me than the resolution though, Ratchet and Clank is probably the best looking game I've ever seen. (I don't have a very good PC).

Well it took PlayStation Support 10 days but they've restored my DriveClub purchase so I can redownload. All is good in that respect.

But that took me back to the 'not enough space' issue I've mentioned before. I have at least 80Gb free on my 2tb hdd but always have to delete stuff to download new (small sized) games.

Last night I was told that the latest Star Wars Battlefront update couldn't install. I checked and there was 101Gb free!
WTF is going on? Both my PS4s do this. Both are 2Tb. Both refuse to let me get less than 80-100 Gb free.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I think on the whole it is a bit too early for 4K consoles. I know some people will switch their TV based on console demands, but I think like the majority, I will only replace my TV with 4K once the current main TV dies. Our main TV is probably about 9 years old now, but it is a 52" 1080P Philips ambi-light and does the job perfectly well. It isn't a smart TV, but it has Sky+ HD, a Now TV box and a Philips Blu-ray player (with Netflix built in) attached. As I can't see me going 4K on any of the sources, I have no urgency to change it.

My gaming TV is about 2 years old, is a 42" 1080p smart TV and again I have no desire to change it. I did have some thoughts about getting a Pro but got much better value from a GPU and RAM upgrade for my PC. I've recently upgraded the CPU and later this year will be getting a better GPU. This configuration will outperform the PS4 Pro and most likely the Scorpio so I don't really see the need for either of them.
