PS4: What's in the box?

Image

The PlayStation 4 will be out this Christmas at a price of $399 / €399 / £349. But what exactly does that get you?

Here's your definitive guide to everything that comes included in the PlayStation 4 box, according to Sony. It's worth noting there's no PlayStation Eye camera included - that's sold separately and will set you back $59 / €49 / £44.

The PlayStation 4
Fairly obviously, the most important thing in your PlayStation 4 box is the console itself. It's packing a 500GB hard drive (though Sony points out that the actual disk space you'll have to play with is less than that because some space will be reserved for system processes). It's got 8GB of GDDR5 memory, an eight-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU, a 1.8 TFLOPS Radeon GPU, two USB 3.0 ports and a six-speed Blu-ray drive.

DualShock 4 controller
You'll get one DualShock 4 controller with the console. As with the DualShock 3, it has a built-in rechargable battery that charges via USB. If you want to buy extra controllers, they'll set you back $59 / €59 / £54 each.

Mono headset
The PlayStation 4 has a strong emphasis on sharing and multiplayer, so this time around the PS4 will come with a headset (something sold separately for PS3), allowing everyone to use voice communication right out of the box.

Cords and cables
Finally, the box comes with three cables. There's your standard AC power cord to power the system, there's an HDMI cable to plug it into your TV, and there's a USB cable, presumably to charge the DualShock 4 controller.

New DUALSHOCK®4 Wireless Controller

Image
The DualShock®4 controller features new innovations to deliver more immersive gaming experiences, including a highly sensitive six-axis sensor as well as a touch pad located on the top of the controller which offers completely new ways to play and interact with games. The new Share button puts video streaming and sharing a tap away.

System Specs

Image

The PS4 system focuses on the gamer, ensuring that the very best games and the most immersive experiences are possible on the platform. The PS4 system enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs. The PS4 system is centred around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art 1.84 TFLOPS graphics processor with 8GB of ultra-fast GDDR5 unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. The end result is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences.

I'd love to play it cool, but I really can't. I think I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy at heart, despite being 34 and owning some common sense. I am really looking forward to this.

An entire conference to confirm the ten-year lifespan, perhaps?

Life would be rather dull if we weren't allowed to get excited about stuff.
The people who would complain about you getting excited are likely the same people who wet themselves at the thought of the next Twilight film.

They will spend the entire time talking about the OLED screen on the pad.

Oh i've got no doubt the internet will find someone to moan about - even if they showed everything we need to know about the console some folks will find something to bitch about.

Without sounding like a graphics whore, I can't wait to see just how good Killzone 4 looks. I think Sony will get the balance right between sequels to existing franchises and new I.Ps. I don't know when Microsoft plan on showing off their next console but Sony have timed this quite well because for the next few weeks and months even, all the gaming media coverage and news will be about the Playstation 4

I'm looking forward to a good show, although I must admit I'm more interested in infrastructure and OS information than the games.
